Lovely words and thank you to Ipswich Town for making a good article about someone not associated with them at all. Football family and all that.
What an impressive bloke Mick is. I can remember watching him play when I first started watching the reds. He was only a young man really but had the big beard on and was a fearsome sight to us young uns. Can still picture him warming up pre match by heading the ball powerfully. Great player. I remember being young and me and my mate stalking a much younger Mick as he walked round town with his girlfriend. After about an hour he walked up to us and said ' look lads time for you to sod off but come up to the ground and ask for me and I will get you some tickets. He did and autographs and freebies. A gent them and now.
Saw him play his first game, which makes me feel ancient. Someone we can be proud of & who respects the town. He moved on eventually, but has always been one of ours & will be. Will get a warm welcome from me.
A true Barnsley Legend. I can still hear him shouting (mainly at Phil Chambers) in front of the Ponty end.....
Aye, a Football League Cup !st Round 2nd Leg game, August 1977. He scored our first goal in a 3-0 win over Chesterfield (we'd lost the first leg away 4-1 the previous Saturday). The following weekend, he made his league debut in our 4-0 over Rochdale in our first league game of the 1977/78 season. I was in the year below him at school, Worsbrough High School, and he'll get a very warm welcome from me, too..
Need to rely on others with a better memory than me - He scored a header at the Ponty End which is the nearest I`ve ever seen to a headed goal just about breaking the back of the net - I think it was in the cup run (maybe Brighton?). As already said Absolute Gentleman and a Legend.
You're right it was Brighton in that League Cup run. Think they scored first and Macca was fouled when they scored. That was his revenge. Probably the most powerful headed goal I've seen at Oakwell over the years.
