As always, I'm looking forward to the game. A chance to win at home for the first time since Leeds and, hopefully, move back into the top ten.
The first time I saw us play Ipswich was during the 1986/87 season. We'd lost 1-0 at Portman Road at the beginning of Winter and were rock bottom of Division 2. In the August we'd lost our strike force and top scorers from the previous season (David Hirst, Ian Walsh, Gordon Owen), started the campaign with no forward line as such and then proceeded to lose our first six games.
By the time the return fixture was played, we'd turned things round. After looking like odds on certs for relegation, we steadily climbed the table, thanks mainly to goals from MacDonald & Wylde. This was despite selling our best player at the time, Larry May, to Sheffield Wednesday. Ipswich were in the Play Off places (this was the first season they'd been introduced). We continued our good form by winning 2-1, but my memory is like Swiss cheese these days and I can't remember the scorers.

The game that stands out most was (I can't even remember when) we were 3-0 up with five minutes to go and ended up drawing 3-3.

Just to say that is not a negative post, not a criticism of Cryne but stands out in the mind.

Yeah, that was round about this time of the year back in 1996. Had there been a couple of minutes more injury time, I'm convinced we'd have seen a repeat of the match against Exeter City from the 1976/77 season when we threw away a 3-0 lead and lost 4-3.

You're right - must have been the 1995-6 season.

Seems like two minutes ago to me, James, rather than 21 years. That creaking noise you're hearing is from my joints and bones!

Had the added bonus of getting to hear my brother-in-law's car reg read out over the tannoy just before their third. His car had been broken into in Piper's Cottage car park. D**le Security doing their usual thing - fella sat in his little wooden hut reading the paper all afternoon. "Sorry mate, I didn't see 'owt"

The Dalian Atkinson / David Currie face off game will always stay in my mind. Two if the best individual performances I've ever seen in one game. Poetry in emotion.

Great second half to the season that. We went to Sunderland on the last day, came back to win 3 2 from 2 0 down, and sent them into a relegation playoff and they got relegated.

Sunderland fans weren't happy and we got chased in the car after the game.

    I flipping can't!
I know it's 14 years ago since I stopped being the Stocksbridge Payroll Manager, but that's no excuse.
    This is becoming embarrassing now.

How about when Jon Macken scored a winner in the last minute and Roy Keane nearly killed the interviewer after the game with the power of his glare!!

I've still got the VHS video of our 5-1 home win from the early nineties (1991?). I think future Red Neil Thompson scored for Ipswich.

Reasonably confident of a win. But the last time I was confident of beating Ipswich we were 2-0 up at half time and lost 3-5.

That said, it's been a while since we've played a team below us in the table at home so looking forward to us having a good go against them.
