Totally speculative, I know because you're not necessarily playing the same teams.

    But:

    Pl 10
    W 2
    D 4
    L 4
    F 9
    A 12

Ignoring the fractions, my maths (always dodgy) would extrapolate that across a season to 45 points and a GD of -14.

A lot of work to do this summer.

With Hourihane (and Winnall) in team from 17th Sept to 25th Nov we played 11 games and got 7 points. Equates to about 29 points in a season.

It's never that black and white

With Conor's contribution I'd say it is that black and white.

You're not allowed to say we're weaker though.

But the full picture is that before Hourihane left we played 27 games and gathered 41 points. That would equate to about 69 points across the season. The games I quoted above are the full picture without Hourihane. An entirely predictable outcome, in my view.

............against the run of play Hourihane picked the ball up and put in a perfect cross for Villa to score.
    Aston Villa 1 - 0 Sheffield Wednesday

    That's one of the differences.

Goes without saying that if we'd have told them they are staying so we could have gave promotion a shot instead of just being happy to stay up, we'd have got many more points than we have since Hourihane and Winnall have gone.

Hourihane was more than good (some eventually) at certain vitally important aspects.

He is not as good overall as a midfielder as James, who I reckon is as good as I've seen for us for many a year, and especially so coming into a team halfway through the season and showing absolute class.

But James doesn't have the ability to take threatening free kicks or corners.

    So they're different animals.

    Our deficiency lies upfront.

Matty James is a good player. In terms if influencing games and results he is miles behind Hourihane but given the position he plays would be more of a replacement for Morsy.

We were having a great season up to January then we lost Winnall, Bree, Morsy, and Hourihane it's my opinion that if we had kept these players and added just 1 or 2 I'm sure we would have made the top 6 easy with Hecky in charge, these opportunity's only happen to club's like Barnsley once or twice in a century, with Hourihane we had a top player in the Redfearn mold. I'm not moaning just giving my take as I've enjoyed this season, my only hope is that Jose and Marley sign new contracts for next season.

when we got a free kick on the wing in perfect position for Hourihane's left foot delivery I used to get almost as excited as if we had been given a penalty. I always thought we had a chance of scoring from those situations, especially when Winnall was upfront.

I really wish for once the board would have some balls and risk taking a hit in the summer and see where we could go by keeping a team together for full season.

Winnall demanding a move wouldn't have done himself any favours by sulking for the rest of the season had we told him no like Watkins. Hourihane would definitely have given his all to the end of the season.

This team with Hourihane, winnall, bree, morsey/james could have easily made the playoffs

More alarming is our home form in general
Last sixteen home games - Won 3, Drawn 7, Lost 6
    Not good at all

Yes I agree he's got a lot of work to do this summer to get anywhere near the level of player he was for us this season. That goal Villa conceded against Huddersfield other day old Connor was far from on the money.

I don't think we'd have made the playoffs. It's frustrating, but i can see why they took the decision to sell.

Villa have nearly caught us and will probably overtake us. Probably not a coincidence.

The directors had to sell - and if I was a director I'd have probably sold the rest of the players whose contracts were up this June.

    But that's not the point.
The point is - why and how have the directors got into this stupid position in the first place where most of the first team players contracts are up at the same time ???
    Total incompetence!!!

I agree with this as much as people don't want to hear it. Aswell as this if players want to leave let them go. We can't lock them in oakwell until the window ends or water board them in the directors office.

You're right. We were in an almost impossible situation: contracts almost done, players wanting to leave, playing well, and big clubs circling to sign them

Many people would've been moaning if we'd finished 8th for example and lost all our best players for nothing
