Thirty nine feckin quid. Glad I've saved me money. I live a couple of miles away from Scampton so I'll look out of the window.
I know there will be more to come but today's announcement is hardly gobsmackin' eye opening marvellously wonderful, must see, fare.
Oh for the long distant days of Finningly show !!

 

The year before last I used to drive past the base on friday afternoons and often had a free Red Arrows show.... I was living in Kirton Lindsay where they filmed the Dam Busters because the air base (now closed) had a grass runway.

 

I paid £36 to see our usual loss at Hillsborough.

£3 more for guaranteed entertainment and something you are presumably interested in doesn't sound that steep to me.

 

I bet the insurance costs have rocketed after the Shoreham disaster. As a one off it doesn't feel too steep to me but I have no similar comparison.

Great memories of Finningley. I think the 1981 or 82 show saw Concorde and the Vulcans together.

 

I saw the Vulcans in about 1978, the Romulans couldn't make it that year.

 

There's a really nice pub in Scampton Village which is at the end of the runway; "The Dambusters Inn" it has a mini museum of Lancaster Bomber bits and a wall where pilots write their names. I would expect it to be packed when the air show is on though.

Free parking and Under 16's Free. Doesn't sound that bad for a day out.

 

Ah but it's all a con, you know.
The pub was "created" a few years ago from a house and small shop. There was never a pub in Scampton up to that point.
It's a fascinating place to explore while having a pint, some of the memorabilia is truly wonderful.
They have now also set up a microbrewery at the pub.
Here's another factoid.... when the main runway was extended across the old A15 in the 1950s and the road was then re-routed to how it is now, they knocked down an old pub slap bang in the middle of the new airfield. Was called the Midge Inn.
The A15 is an old straight Roman road and just after the RAF main gate heading north continued in a straight line for miles. The old bits of the original A15 are still there, cut in two by the airfield.

 

Interesting, that seems to be bucking the trend of pubs closing down and the and being developed for housing etc. In which case it is to be applauded.

The road is Ermine Street and the bit of it to the north of the M180 is a very pleasant stretch to cycle on, most of it (A15 south from the M180) is horrendously busy and dangerous, I've seen some ridiculous overtakes on the bits where there are sudden dips.

I used to play cricket for Aisthorpe, we regularly got a show on Sundays.

 

Now that is interesting !
I've lived here for 13 years and I have never seen anybody playing cricket on the Aisthorpe field. The little pavilion is still there with mowers, stumps etc inside, but the field is slightly overgrown and I do not know if there is a team or even if there are ever any games there.
It is probably the only cricket field in the area, I really am struggling to think of another anywhere near.

 

Remember Seeing Concorde and the Vulcans as a teenager in the mid 70s. After Concorde had flown by the had to delay the display until the air had "settled down" after the turbulence

 

I played back in 2008 and 2009, I know back then there were some problems with the owner of the house who didn't really want us there, but couldn't get rid of us. I know they played last year, and according to play-cricket they're fielding a team this year, so I couldn't say if they've moved or not.

Cousin had a beach hut at Shore Road, Sandbanks in Poole. Height of the season we
used to get to see a free twenty minute display from the Red Arrows. It was great.
Don't know whether they still do it now though.

 

Went to Finningley many times...the best one though was when my dad and I went as guests of his mate ( the aptly named Bob Plane) who opened the show with a display of glider aerobatics...being accepted as part of the behind the scenes stuff was quite amazing.

 

Some of the best times I had in the RAF were working on air shows. I was part of the show organising team at Finningley twice (Battle of Britain Co-ord office) and Show Operations Centre at Fairford three times. It was a real privilege being able to get close to aircraft like the American spy plane U2 and stealth bomber F117.

Stood in our garden last night to watch the Red Arrows, they were performing at the Holkham Country Fair which is about 3 miles away, we had direct flyovers and a good 15 minutes of aerobatics.
