What would you have rather seen the club do in January? Lay out for me how you would have handled the situation considering the following points that cannot be altered. Winnall expresses an interest in leaving. Morsey Signs a new deal at Wigan. Hourihane expresses an interest in leaving and comes to you directly to ask despite how much he loved playing for Barnsley (as he did with Mr Cryne).
What puzzles me is how apart from Morsey signing a new deal at Wigan, is all this information in the public domain?
Keep the players other than Morsy( who we have more than adequately replaced). If we were unable to do so in all cases than not release the players until we had replacements of comparable ability lined up. I have nothing against selling players. They come and go. If you don't replace them with players of similar abilities you will get worse and eventually be relegated. We have repeated the mistakes of Hill's penultimate season and apparently learned nothing with a similar result in terms of on field performances. Of course if you were better at the contract side of things you would avoid such a melt down in the first place but that's another issue. Not that I am especially a moaner. We have had a good season and if as seems likely we finish 18th or 19th then it will still have been an ok season. The worry is going into the close season needing to buy/loan 12-16 players and integrate them to hit the ground running. It's easy to see us as next seasons Rotherham but who knows?
People who use the word "moan" or "moaners" as a sweeping generalisation grind my gears more than those who actually do the incessant complaining. I can't answer the actual question, I just wish we'd had our better players tied down to longer contracts.
If by moaners you mean the fans who are frustrated that a season that promised so much has just fizzled out then does that make you a happy clapper who is just blindly content no matter what?
People say keep the players!! How do you stop conor hourhine for example moving to villa? He was on 5k at barnsley he is now on 29k at villa that's an extra 24k every week 96k a month better off than he would have been staying here in the remaining 6 months of his contract he had left here he will be £576k better off. Plus he has gone villa one of the biggest clubs in england to play in front of 30k each week as opposed to 13k. That's what we are up against so the keep the players argument is easier said then done. You could blame the board for this the player the agent whoever it's no one's fault it's just life the footballing phrymid.
Simple the same way you prevented Marley Watkins leaving you say NO your still under contract and you will see it out.
I think the point people are trying to make is that their contracts should have been extended on promotion. The club bottled it thinking we'd be relegated. Hence 3 of our better players were sold for peanuts and a few more will go in the summer for nothing. We maybe couldn't stop them leaving but we could have got more money for them if they'd been on a longer contract. Most clubs renegotiate when there are 2 years left but that's where we start. Good players are on 5 year contracts so that clubs can protect their assets but I doubt we've ever had one on any more than 3
Marley saw all his pals leave for bigger money and wanted a go. Hecky had a word with him talked him round and I expect him to go in the summer and earn more elsewhere. Fair play to him for not pushing a move even more and forcing his way out. Marley wouldn't have earned the same sums conor has.
No way would they have signed 5 year contracts in the summer Pat put his own money in to sign winnall and conor and implemented the scouting system that brought them to the clubs attention. He also funded the accademy that brought bree through with his own money. Like already said what about the numptys we have had on long deals Mike shearon 4 years dale jennings 3 ect
So one swallow makes a summer does it? Why weren't Redfearn, Ward, De Zeeuw etc on 4 year contracts? Anyway the Sheron argument never washed with me. I'm probably one of the few who thought Sheron was a good player. Half the time he made good runs which were wasted because the midfield hadn't spotted his run. Too many were quick to get on his back. We had one dick who used to sit in front of us in the ponty end who used to boo him every time he scored. Unbelievable.
I'm sorry, I have to disagree in a big way about Mike Sheron. But there is no point in going over old ground yet again, so I will agree to differ with you.
Well as Hecky said 'the Morsy deal should've been done' so first off that would've been completed. I would've told all of Bree, Hourihane & Winnall that the club is in a financially sound position because of the sale of Mawson & Stones & that we have a unique chance to get in the play offs with no requirement to sell our best players. I would explain to them that they would be going nowhere unless we received a ridiculous offer & that if we did get promoted they would be offered terms in line with what rivals were offering. It would be in the players best interests to continue to perform well as all of them would want to ensure the best possible contract next season whether that was with us or elsewhere.
Were it my job id have been fired for allowing key assets get to the stage that they have all the negotiating power in the first place. The fact no one is furious were sleep walking towards the same thing happening in the summer is an outrage.
If Marley was genuinely offered a Premiership club he wouldn't have been far behind Conor financially would he? As the above states if you want a player to stay you just tell them to honour the contract they signed and that they can leave at the end of it with your blessing.
