If i was a young ambitious player

I would not sign for Barnsley.
I wouldn't sign for Barnsley because of a variety of reasons
1. Low wages
2. The club has no ambition or belief in itself
3. The club itself does not see me as a long term signing so i know i will be moving into an area for a year or so and then having to move house again when i move elsewhere.
4.even a promotion will not see me offered better terms by the club.
5. The evidence shows that the club has no problem wrecking the tem midway through a season which makes me look less attractive to other teams (see Marley Watkins)

Our stepping stone for kids approach may work in the lower leagues where we are the big fish able to attract the better kids but when we are a small fish in a big pond we reduce our ability to tempt players to join us rather than our rivals. Had we retained our best players and finished in or around the playoffs we would have been a much bigger pull for the best up and coming players.

 

Ahh yeah I'd much rather go somewhere else where the team is made up of players who are picked for their name and reputation and earn thousands and thousands a week as opposed to a team that provides opportunity for younger players.

Any young player will see what we've done to the likes of Stones, Mawson, Hourihane, Bree, Holgate, Roberts, etc and see that they will have their chance to develop here because they will get the game time. If a young player is willing to work hard and doesn't mind being in the team of underdogs every week they will develop their own game and provide results for the team.

Also, I'm pretty sure the moving thing isn't an issue for footballers, if they're not expecting to move house/location a few times in their playing careers then they will be doing something very different to almost every footballer nowadays.

 

Glad your not a footballer then as barnsley looks a good club to many players

 

Looks now or looked in league 1?

 

I'd say that depends if we are shopping in the same market. If we approach this years Angus McDonald he will snatch our hands off. If we approach this years Tom Bradshaw again I couldn't see a problem attracting him. If we attempting to take it to the next level then we may struggle but that's more to do with wages than owt else.

If I was a lower league player - I would jump at the chance of joining Barnsley.

In fact it's by far the best club to join if you are a lower league player.

I'd look at how the manager has turned lower league players into Championship + players.

I'd look at all the players recently sold by the club that have gone on to big wages at other clubs.

So I'd use the club as a stepping stone - sign a short term contract that suits me and only me and doesn't tie me down - listen to the manager - work hard - get noticed - then foook the club off - walk out the door for next to no transfer fee - and join a club that can pay me big big BIG wages.

Or a club that trains you and develops you into a far better player that will then let you move on when you've hit the next level rather than forcing you to stay.

But can I just point out that if you agree with this post then clearly you must also agree with all my other posts relating to the board of directors inability to tackle the critically important issue of producing more flexible player contracts that (increases?) benefit to the player but also ensures the club is able to recoup money involved in the risk of signing that player - and the time and effort placed on that player to bring them up to Championship + standard.

 

The next level would be young hungry players championship and above who are not being selected or are available. Someone like Mowatt who we signed or Morsy that didn't or Armstrong and Kent who we couldn't afford even if we wanted to. We would struggle (on the whole) to sign these players permanently but as it said solely due to wages.

 

If I was an ambitious young player I would jump at the chance to join Barnsley. Just look at the young players who have bettered their careers here recently. You really do come out some rubbish.
