Pure guess, Peter Cunningham in the early thirties? He scored 17 in 14 games, so a fair chance of a hat trick?
So the full list of Yorkshire Derby hat tricks for Barnsley is: 1908 - Harry Kay, Hull City. Final Score: 4-2 1911 - George Lillycrop, Bradford Park Avenue. Final score: 7-0 1934 - Teddy Ashton, Rotherham United. Final Score: 5-1 1936 - Fred Fisher, Bradford Park Avenue. Final Score: 5-1 (4 Goals) 1950 - Alex Wright, Bradford Park Avenue. Final Score: 3-1 1978 - Brian Joicey, Halifax Town. Final Score: 4-2 (His last goals for the club) 1980 - Trevor Aylott, Hull City. Final Score: 5-0 (Fastest Barnsley hat trick from goal 1-3. 8 minutes) 1981 - Ian Banks, Rotherham United. Final Score: 4-2 1987 - Ian Chandler, Hull City. Final Score: 4-3 (Win) 1995 - Andy Payton, Huddersfield Town. Final Score: 4-0 2005 - Michael Chopra, Huddersfield Town. Final Score: 4-2 2011 - Ricardo Vaz Te, Leeds United. Final Score: 4-1
The Michael Chopra one sticks in my mind for the penalty we were given. Chops ran in front of their keeper who had the ball in his hands, keeper barged chops and ref pointed to the spot. Huddersfield fans hated Chopra at that time. Sent from my SM-G850F using Tapatalk
So the next teaser... In recent times, Daniel Nardiello and Craig Hignett have enjoyed dream debuts, scoring a brace each in Oakwell wins. As mentioned earlier in the thread, Higgy almost made it extra special but missed a penalty for his hat-trick. Can anyone name the only BFC player to score a hat-trick on his debut?
Hmm. I've been watching reds 39 yrs, and don't think it's anyone from that time. Am I right so far? Sent from my SM-G850F using Tapatalk
Well I'll quit whilst I'm ahead then, because owt before my time would require me to cheat and look it up Sent from my SM-G850F using Tapatalk
It's before anyone's time I'm sure. If you were alive at the time it happened you'd be 97 years old now
Great question Andy but two other players have scored a Hat-Tricks on their League debut for the Reds and strangely enough it was in the same fixture. In August 1939 Buddy Maxwell got three in the opening fixture of the season against Nottingham Forest but this was wiped from the records when the campaign was abandoned due to WW2. When the Football League resumed in 1946 they kept the 1939-40 fixture list and in August 1946 George Robledo also grabbed a triple against the Trees.
Thanks David. I should be clear, everyone, my question related to full debut, not just the league, so although Robledo did score a hat trick on his league debut he had already played in the FA Cup for us. Fair point too about Buddy Maxwell. It wouldn't be fair of me to discount his debut despite it being expunged from the records. So in actual fact then counting Maxwell there are two hat trick scoring debutants. I was looking for Russell Wainscoat who signed in midweek from Maltby, replacing Dickie Downs who had been transferred to Everton, and knocked in a hat trick against Fulham in a 4-1 win at Oakwell in March 1920. He also scored the equaliser in the return fixture a week later, earning us a 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage. So Higgy and Nards were so close to equalling that feat. Higgy even closer with that penalty. Although he did put it in row Z, so not that close!
