Read on numerous occasions that we haven't replaced him. We're talking about a player that we took from the lower leagues and polished up over a couple of seasons. He was potentially a great midfield man when we bought him, but he left a top player at this level and could go even further. We've signed a very good player on loan in Matty James, and now he's into his stride hes bossing opposing players. We can't afford to keep him beyond the end of the season, yet he doesn't offer what Hourihane did in terms of goals and assists, which begs the question of what Connor is really worth. How do you replace someone like that like for like without spending a fortune on a fee and wages? These players have always come and gone, but I don't think we've ever replaced any of them like for like. There has always been a big gap in between when you think how many we've had over the last 40 years from Glavin to Hourihane. A handful. Sent from my SM-G850F using Tapatalk
Depends if we want to replace him with like for like quality, and by that I mean a proven championship/upper league 1 player. Stevie Mallan was the player we hoped to bring in to replace him, but he has no experience and would have been a gamble. However if we did bring Mallan in, surely keeping Hourihane as well would be more beneficial in order to ease Mallan in ready for next season. Otherwise we're just throwing a player in at the deep end, and that's a disaster waiting to happen in this league. For me we need to splash some cash and build a good spine, get the balance right and more gambles will pay off. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Like for like. Top championship player with some of the best stats in this league. Let's name some names who we could realistically afford without upsetting the rest of the squad by paying them more than the rest. Sent from my SM-G850F using Tapatalk
The answer is we can't guarantee being able to. Players like Hourihane are one per generation. In time we may unearth another gem, but not necessarily with the same attributes. Glavin went missing in action a lot, but he scored for fun; Redfearn was a take-the-game-by-the-scruff-of-the-neck type who scored plenty; Hourihane didn't 'boss' the opposition and was mainly a creator who scored some worldies.
Hourihane took pretty much every free kick and corner. He got numerous assists and goals from them. He didn't get that many (relatively) from open play. Matty James was never going replace the goals and assists because he's not on set piece duties. We're in need of a specialist set piece taker because while Hammill can put in a few decent crosses, he's nowhere near as accurate as Hourihane and he's not going to score from free kicks.
£8 mill transfer fee and wages over £20grand. Not gonna be replaced. A potential replacement could come in and that's what we'll go for.
Yes - about that. We arnt going to pay that so we have to wait a year or more for one to be 'polished'. Then we wait for another club to say 'thank you very much' and give us less than half his value.
10 -15 million transfer fee and 20 to 30 grand wages. Matty James is a defensive midfielder and plays a completely different role. Less than 30 percent of Hourihane's assists were from corners. Anyhoo James doesn't take em cos he's not good at them.
Tend to agree with you. We shouldn't allow anybody into the last year of their contract. Hourihane and Winnall was offered a deal last summer when we went up BUT they refused to sign it. Do we let them run it out or sell them? It's all opinion and I honestly wouldn't know what to do. Same with Watkins and Scowen.
But if a player refuses to sign a new deal we've no choice but to sell them if an offer comes in. Can't do anything about that unfortunately. It doesn't seem that any reasonable offers came in the summer, but as they had proven themselves in January we were left in an impossible situation. You could argue in a way we hadn't the best of both worlds as we've had the benefit of them this season and have got some money. Obviously it's dissapointing to lose them but I honestly don't know what more the club could have done
Plenty on here seem to know, but none of them have ever run a football club, and even fewer have even run their own business. Sent from my SM-G850F using Tapatalk
That's what I'm saying. We either sell or let them go on a free / sell them in January at a low cut price.
Spot on. If we'd gambled and got promotion things would've been great, but fail to do so and we'd have found ourselves in a very tricky situation
The problem is we seem to be the only club who doesn't have a clue about players true worth, so we are light years behind other clubs. The sooner the club wake up and realise we are in the 21st century the better. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
These fans who think we should have gambled on giving Conor £20k til end of season ....... have you considered he still might have wanted out? It is what it is ....... Let's move on. Sent via Royal Mail and typed up by my Tapatalk byatch
