Just wondering if others agree with me that we could adopt the now favourable 3-4-3 system next season ? I think with the players we have available and with some astute additions it could potentially work in our favour. Davies MacDonald Roberts Jackson / Kpekawa Yiadom Scowen Mowatt White Williams / Moncur Bradshaw Watkins / Hammill Appreciate some players are out of contract and others will have interest in them. What do you think ?
I think if you play 3 at the back you have to have 5 in midfield cos if you have 4 in midfield the opposition just play their wingers higher and wider .
Ye I get where you're coming from there Plobby. Could drop Moncur or Williams a little deeper and have Watkins up top with Bradshaw
Not necessarily. Chelsea have adopted a 343 system this season. As have Tottenham on occasions. Sent from my SM-J510FN using Tapatalk
I think a fluid 3-5-2 / 5-3-2 could serve us well especially if we can keep Janko and Yiadom. Hard to say though as our squad will be massively different come August.
For me, this system, when employed by the opposition, is the one that has given us most trouble this year, but I imagine it does take a lot of learning and it does need the right players. Just shuffling next years staff into the formation will not do the job sadly. As you may be aware, I write a Minority Report for all our home fixtures. The report concentrates on systems and formations. When we first saw this one it mystified me, because at first sight it looked like 3-6-1. I turned to the bloke who sits next to me to ask for confirmation and he agreed that they were playing 3 defenders and just 1 forward, so the other 6 must be in midfield. It took a long time to work out exactly what was happening, and the same could be said for our team. The two wing backs push well up the field when the team has the ball, which means that the back 3 must split across the field to cover the quick break, but they have 2 defensive midfield players ahead of them to help them. The lone forward also has 2 attacking midfield players potentially supporting him. The system is quite narrow, the width being provided by the wing backs. In its attacking form, the system is 3-2-4-1 with the two attacking midfield players pushing up to make it 3-4-3 in extremis and in its defensive form it is 5-4-1. It seems to have great fluidity, but you need a very fit team indeed to play it and the right man up front. Fulham played the system when they beat us easily at Oakwell. They had Chris Martin up top and he was exactly right for the job. He is strong and hard to shake off the ball. He gave his supporting players the time that they needed to get up to him to support him. They also had Scott Parker playing in a defensive mid-field position. On the day we had no-one extra in central midfield to put him under any pressure because our central midfielders were tied up marking their attacking midfield players and no-one dropped out of our front two to put him under any pressure. He played from his arm chair, picking passes as he wanted to. We will have a very different team by the start of next season, and I have no idea what system the manager wants to play. What I do know is that the players he picks up should suit the system he wants to use most, and the system he wants to change to dependent upon what is happening in the game. Since January, he has tended to use 4-4-2 and 4-5-1. When he has played 5 in midfield they have been arranged as 4-3-3, 4-1-4-1 and 4-4-1-1. It does not look like 3-4-3 has entered his thoughts, and if he has not considered it, bearing in mind the special players he needs to make it work, then I think we can discount it.
