Off to the grand national tomorrow, any tips from those of you who know your horse racing would be appreciated!
my tip for you Silkstone is don't have above £5 on and pick your own Hoss because no one knows the winner of a race like that. I have a bet most days but don't think I'll be betting on the National.
The BHA has in recent years run scared of the criticism of the animal welfare lobby (not judgmental - just fact). That has led to the character of the fences being drastically altered. So what you often have is a huge number of horses falling far less than they did (a good thing) but the field not thinning out as the better jumpers emerge. Too many runners stay in contention and given that, the size of the field is too great for the modern day race. Add in that the race is often run at an injudicious pace for the distance involved. All of these factors have affected the predictability of the race. In consequence, the average price of the winner over the last 10 years has been greater than 34/1. So clearly it is a race that serious bettors should not entertain betting in. That said, my shortlist is Definitly Red, Vieux Lion Rouge, One For Arthur and Blaklion! But Yanworth (c. 2/1) in the 4.20 is a better bet!
Yeah no doubt the do gooders will be out in force today telling people how cruel they think the race is. Surprised you've mentioned Yanworth as it was turd the other week at Cheltenham. Gotta be some better value somewhere in the race.

A few pointers from a site I use... best profile for national male horse aged 8 to 11 year old last ran within 58 days starting under 40/1 under 15 chase starts last ran in a class 2 or higher grade 3 or more runs in season this formula has had 9 of the last 12 winners from only 56 bets.... more considerations generally the ground at aintree is pretty quick so mudlarks tend to struggle your horse needs to have won a 3 mile plus chase valued at 17 grand or more ( or ran exceptionally well as last years winner had ) the horse needs to be a prominent racer...must be able to lay up handy. cheltenham winners in same year have a very poor record. 18 from last 20 winners finished in first 8 last time out. horses with any sort of headgear have lost the last 7 nationals despite supplying around 40 percent of field.
Worked out well backing the winner the other day at 16s. Came from nowhere to win fairly comfortably.
