Does anybody else remember this from their late teens and early 20s?

Having friends (or maybe themselves) who would have their cars with a nice sound system in and big fat exhaust and would cruise the streets looking for young girls to honk their horn at and shout things in the hope that the girl would like the attention and flag you down?

Or remember them hanging around outside schools in their cars getting the attention of the young girls on their lunch or just finishing school?

Perhaps you will remember them going out in their cars into town because it was the under 18s night and they knew it was a great time to pick up young girls who were desperate for attention?

    Anyone?

By the way no i never did any of the above but i could name a few dozen people who did that and i was under the impression it was, and still is, all pretty common amongst 'lads' between the ages of around 18 and 22

No. My first car was a smoky Flying Standard 14 of 1938 vintage. I don't believe any mini-skirted girl would have been interested in me in that machine.

I remember being the girl in that scenario. Couldn't walk down a street between the ages of 14-19 without being honked at 10 times. Never understood why grown men would honk at teenage girls. I do have to admit to not being completely innocent though as we used to have a game where we'd go stand by the school gates at lunchtime (not doing anything, just stood there, in uniform (trousers not skirt, no-one wore skirts at our school) to see how many honks we would get. We would never flag them down or show attention though, we would purposefully ignore them, making eye contact or doing anything to illicit honks was cheating.

I do have to say though that the vast majority of 'honkers' were far, far older than 18-22.

No, sounds more like an American high school film. What is/was an under 18's night?

That was kind of where I was going with it Tyrone. I remember that a lot of 'lads' that age, and as jamdrop says even older, doing things like that regularly and in fact they still do but it is swept under the carpet quite a lot.

It's when nightclubs open their doors to under 18s.

The upper age limit of 22 that i mentioned was probably being very kind to those involved. At my school there was always at least one car parked up outside at dinner with a group of girls hanging in the window and more sat in a bench with the men from the cars sat arms draped round them. I always thought it was a bit weird that the school never did anything about it even though it was obvious that inappropriate relationships were taking place.

It happens all the time. And I do seriously mean all the time. Under 18 nights are nights out for under 18s in nightclubs, also known as 'pop and crisp' nights and 'bald fanny' nights. When I was that age it was in the old Heaven and Hell building and once a month it was a foam party.

I'm glad you said bald fanny and not me. I think that name alone says a lot about what happened at those nights and the kind of people who hung around outside to take advantage.

I don't know what may or may not have happened as I just went to have a dance with my friends at something a bit more grown up than a school disco. The streets around Heaven and Hell and up by the Assembly as it was then, used to be full of the same cars circling round and round honking their horns, shouting things and pulling over hoping for the attention of young girls. Thinking about it now, I guess there must have been a lot of girls taken advantage of but it didn't occur to me then as I wasn't interested in that and I guess I thought people just ignored them like I did.
