http://www.footballgroundguide.com/old-grounds-and-stands/oakwell-barnsley/index.html this is the Oakwell that I was brought up in....wonderful memories.
I loved the ground when it was like that ... and I was a kid. Be reyt though - looks a bit of a sh*thole looking back!
I miss those days and tbe atmosphere. It's like a library these days. Football needs safe standing areas imo.
Absolutely right. Sometimes I feel out of place singing in the east lower! It's only for the bigger games when the whole ground gets involved and there's a fantastic atmosphere when that happens
Can't remember as much ground snobbery back then either because we were all in the same boat. Went to Old Trafford with a mate back in the late 70s, and although it was obviously a much bigger ground and attendance, it wasn't anything out of the ordinary. Similarly going to Millmoor, Blundell Park and Gay Meadow etc didn't really have people commenting on how bad they were. Sent from my SM-G850F using Tapatalk
That away end was hilarious. Can't believe there's still some league clubs with open terraces for away fans to this day (Yeovil, Accrington, Exeter and probably a few others)
Deceptively large though. Held more than the current away end on occasion. Sent from my SM-G850F using Tapatalk
Big game I remember beating Brighton, Man City, Swansea, all in the first division. I remember Liverpool coming over but not sure if we won that one. We even had corners at the ponty end filled in! We did it first lol
Loved it when the players came down the old tunnel. I normally stood in the Ponty but occasionally me and my dad stood near the halfway line next to the tunnel and you could speak to the players as they came off. Must have been a nightmare for those that had a poor game though.
I was in the brewary stand for the Everton game, recall loads of scousers Sat in front of the away end fencing with sprained ankles after bit of a surge on the packed kop and it was only a month or two before the hillsbrough disaster, I think there was a lot more in oakwell than the official attendance that was given out, sithi.
Lost 3-1, Dusty Bin scored for us. The attendance was about 36,000 that night and similar for the City match. The atmosphere was fantastic both nights.
remember all those games ... what an old git I am before John Smiths it said "Oakwell Ales" on the roof of the brewery stand oh happy days, when life was simpler
Less than 30,000 if I remember right. I don't think the capacity was 36,000 as it was more or less full for the City match for the previous round when there were about 33,000 in. Liverpool brought just a couple of thousand and with us having about 27,000 tickets it was below 30,000. I've never seen the highlights of this match, not even Walker's goal. It was foggy on the night and I couldn't make it out from the Ponty as he scored in front of the away end. I had a good view of Souness' equaliser though. It sat up for him lovely and that was that.
