common denominator. we HAD to attack every game and HAD to try to win games. Every other season we have settled for doing just enough

Can you remember the last time we had a consistent two halves of a season?

We might have been consistently poor for the odd season, but rarely good.

I can remember us looking like we were going up at boxing day under Thordarse and tailing off badly.

Half a good season under Hill until we lost our best players and fell away.

Following season looking dead and buried and flicker worked wonders.

Last season we hit rock bottom and came good in the 2nd half of the season.

Lots of clubs in this league have been very similar this season,

    I'm quite cheerful thanks.

I've been to games. I've drank beer. I've seen my friends, I've seen and caught up with old friends and made new ones.
I've chatted ***** to folk next to me in pubs and grounds around the country. They've chatted ***** back.

I honestly think as much as I like the team to win games in a positive manner I prefer the social aspect.

Let's be right. It's only a game. In the grand scheme of things its irrelevant.

Pre January 31st - brilliant. Some fantastic wins home and away.

Post January 31st - crap, and typically I missed the two games we won. No home wins since then.

Overall: Decent. Not fantastic, not terrible, but decent all things considered.

We keep going round in circles don't we.
At the start of the season EVERYONE would have snatched the hand off anyone offering us this position in the league.

But that's not the point is it.

Point is the club and especially Hecky and his backroom staff has been let down badly by the directors who managed to get all the first team up for sale in January.
And by doing so undermined all the good work Hecky had done.
    That's unacceptable!!!

The question is, why do we have bad 2nd halves of a season, particularly last time we were in this league? We all know the answer...

Importantly they get a longer period of time to recruit. Having playoffs last season meant we had to wait until we knew what division we'd be in. No problems this year.

Yes, round in circles is correct. Because you keep making the same statement and I keep telling you you're wrong.

The 'directors' didn't let anyone down. Nobody was up for sale. The first team players under the guidance of Hecky performed admirably and thus attracted interest from bigger, richer suitors.

Those few players decided they wanted better financial rewards than Barnsley could offer and with their agents help they found clubs willing to offer them that opportunity. The clubs in question are two of the biggest in the division and Villa are arguably one of the biggest in the country.

They were all big losses to us and yes it has contributed to our fall away from the top ten. The fact none of them have pulled trees up since leaving suggests they were better in our team. As in, we made them look better. Small ponds and all that.

We have to hope the club can keep succeeding against the odds. Because without ridiculous financial power arriving or 18,000 season tickets sold we will always be striving to overachieve.

Making huge profits on Mawson, Bree, Winnall and Hourihane as well as having the benefit of their talents when here will hopefully lessen the task this summer. And I can say without absolute certainty that we are seen as a superb home for up and coming talent. But in the modern era we are never ever going to retain players for very long who are playing exceptionally well. Because of money.

It's all about money. The game is ruled by it now more than ever. It's crap I know. But it's the truth, and so no matter how many times you whinge about good people working hard at the club it will make no difference.

Oh, and not attending or supporting the club financially kind of kills any point you keep trying to reiterate.

Big ask to continue supporting a club that not only has given up on any chance of success but if we get a half decent player we will flog em as soon as possible. We abandoned the season in January should be offering refunds really.

Modern football don't you just love it. I'm almost done with it myself.

After the miners strike the club and tbe town were at their lowest ebb. Gates of 5000, town demoralised and depressed, 100 quid to sit on the bench with the manager. We sacked our manager at the end of the season after finishing 11th after we had embarked on a 3 month unbeaten run.

I guess we had not totally dismissed ambition then and weren't just around to make up numbers.

    Kick against the pricks.

    Onwards and upwards

In fairness though whitey is was a legal impossibility for any of our players to sign for any other club this january unless we did indeed put them up for sale

Yes. We could have said no to their demands and then had to deal with the consequences whilst also losing out on any money. Risk reward innit?

I'm not backing or disagreeing with either outlook. Gamble or play it safe. Not my call to make. I'm merely giving my opinion on what actually occurred. And I completely understand why we went down the path we did.

Whether it was the wrong/right thing to do is up for debate depending on your outlook I suppose.
