I don't often post on here but my wanted to capture where I think we need to strengthen for next season. I am assuming Watkins and Scowen will leave :-( And that we will accept something in the region of 2.5M for Roberts and he will go to :-( Also assumed Yiadom will stay (please, please) I have assumed a 4-4-2 formation with 1 defensive minded midfielder and 1 attack minded midfielder. I have assumed 2 players for every position. ? means vacancy to be filled I have put first choice player first GK: Davies | Townsend RB: Yiadom | ? CH: ? | ? | McDonald | Cowgill LB: ? | White RM: ? | ? DM: ? | ? AM: Moncur | Mowatt LM: Hammill | Hedges CF: ? | ? | Bradshaw | ? So we need IMHO 11 players 2 centre half's 1 right back 1 left back 2 right wingers 2 defensive midfielders 3 strikers I almost forgot about Ryan Williams who I see fighting for that attacking midfield role with Moncur and Mowatt. Elliot Lee will leave or go out on loan Callum Evans will be a back up player or go out on loan Stefan Payne will be a back up player or go out on loan again I would have included Janko as RM but I believe he's on loan (stand to be corrected if he isn't)
Doubt White or Lee will be with us next season and probably not Williams either. Our main policy will see us go for up and coming young players to develop and sell on. That's fine, it's how we survive but i also reckon we need to back that up with 2 or 3 proven players. I'd suggest Vaughan from Bury and Adeyemi who's been in loan at Rotherham. I think his Cardiff contract is up in the summer.
Agree we need about 10 players. Although depends on whether Hecky has confidence in Sessi, Jacob Brown, Stefan Payne and Ryan Williams to compete for 1st team. Payne is getting great reviews from shrews fans. Saying that now he's getting match fit he's a cut above, works his knackers off, and they would love to have him next season. Would rather he came back, worked with Hecky until Jan and we decide whether he has a future or not with us. 10 players - hope its 6 permenant and 4 loans. Depending on what is available out of contract perhaps more permenant. 3 or 4 top class loans will be the difference for me. Tom Lawrence or Tammy Abraham, another year of Ryan Kent and an Aaron Mooy/Matty James type CM on loan. Loads of great players out there - and with a few million hopefully, for once, we'll have the transfer kitty to go and sign our top 5 or 6 targets. Really looking forward to seeing who the club signs.
The "transfer kitty" is totally irrelevant, it wages that matter and (rightly or wrongly) we won't match at least sides next season
It's not "irrelevant" though is it. Plenty of talent in the lower leagues that will cost between £500k and £1m. Instead of only being able to sign a couple of them we might be able to sign 5 or 6. Wages are only an issue if trying to sign the "established"'stars.
Hiram Boateng left sided midfielder worth a punt. Aged 21 on loan from Palace at Northampton. Very strong on his left peg. Loves to take people on. Probably needs to improve his positional play when he hasn't got the ball. Big Sam might let us have him on loan otherwise cost to sign him permanently could be circa £500k.
Then the player will decide. Think it's been that way for a few years... like when we signed Scowen, Hourihane, Roberts, McDonald, Davies, Watkins, Yiadom, Moncur, Hammill, Bradshaw.... .... seems like if we have money to invest in the lower league talent then we can offer them wages to sign. Sure you'll disagree and tell me that the world is doomed and we'll never sign a player again.
You pay the player the wages that you negotiate. What they are worth within your budget. I forget... Barnsley have never signed players before! We're doomed!
I'm saying that you don't sign players for £1 million then pay em £1500 a week. No one is suggesting we won't sign anyone, stop being so silly.
Because we have a strict wage structure and the owner has clearly stated that we will not be using the transfer income to subsidise expenditure over and above the normal income streams of the club. The only question is what is considered the normal income level.
Again. Why have you chosen to pick £1,500 a week as your specified wage? Do you know what our weekly wage budget was this year and the limits we paid players dependent on their considered importance to the team? Could you let me know what our wage budget will be next year? Just so I know how depressed to get about our inability to sign any of the targets Hecky has lined up.
I'm not suggested you should get depressed. At all. Stop being so daft. We're trying to debate summat and you keep reverting to hyperbole. What I'm saying is we won't be using the transfer income to subsidise wages we can't afford from normal income. Choose £4k. It's still not enough to pay a £1 million player especially when it's more likely said player would be interning more than us. We will sign players but not spend big on fees as you seem to think. The money in the pot is there to sustain the club.
Obviously we don't have any published accounts for our first season back in the championship. Our last season saw us spend 85% of turnover on wages. With turnover of circa £9m that means we spent about £7.7m on wages. Our policy has been to reduce this percentage slightly. However this has been offset by an increase in turnover projected for survival in the championship. With a first team playing squad of 25 players making up the vast majority of that wage budget I think, for the right player, we can spend more than £1,500 a week.
Hyperbole? Because I don't think we'll struggle to recruit in the summer. the average wages (in 2016) for professional footballers, by level; Prem £32k Champ £6k L1 £1.3k L2 £775 We can compete for the right players. We won't over pay and rightly so in my humble opinion. Others disagree and are worried. Fair enough.
I have NOT said we will struggle to recruit just that the transfer income we've had in won't affect our transfer policy. Not disagreed either that we won't over pay and that being right
