Reading transfer talk about us them and everyone. Talking to a friend coming back from a disappointing evening in Wigan abut a few things and one of those things was transfers and pull of the championship. People try and make out that we are some sort of tiny club with an income i'd imagine of 20/30 million for the 2016/2017 season and money still to come (do we get money for Newcastle going straight back up?) and the 6 million pound solidarity payment. Anyway back to why I make the thread. With the money mentioned above, we surely can compete and maybe out do many clubs in Europe especially at second tier level and i'd imagine a lot of top tier clubs in Holland, Belgium and maybe even the likes of Spain, Portugal and France? Could we try and sell ourselves to other markets and be some sort of stepping stone club with a large % increase on cheap players and also gamble.
I'm all for it. The problem is getting the right player who'll be able to adapt to the English game. It's not been a particularly successful plan for us in the past really; for every Heinz Muller, there's a Mounir El Haimour, Miguel Mossto, and O'Neil Thompson. We did flirt with the idea last season. We were very close to signing Jinty Caenepeel if you believe all you read. Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk
Agree with this. As Moncur has pointed out its difficult for a player sometimes moving from Essex to Barnsley. Let alone throwing in the difficulties of coming from another country. Also the scouting network we have is set up for England - to do the necessary research and reviews of players abroad would require the same level of network in each country. It's just as hard finding the right players abroad as it is in the U.K. So needs the same level of recruitment network to identify, monitor and eventually purchase those players. Huge capital outlay if you want to do that across Europe. We are looking abroad. But not to the same extent as we are at home. As Sessi shows - if we believe we have the right player we will go do it. Mounir El Haimour, Diego Leon, domink Werling, Miguel Mossto, Pederson, Christensen. Those were the days!
I'd forgotten all about Sessi D'Almeida. Oddly enough I was able to remember some Dutch lad that we nearly signed but not one of our own. Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk
If I remember rightly it was only scuppered by the agents demanding massive fees. He's only 20 so who knows. Wonder if we'll be interested this summer at the right price. How's he performed this year do you know?
If I remember correctly, they wanted 2 million for him, which is why a deal wasn't struck. We could very well be back in again. He's down to the final year of his contract and he seemed pretty keen on a move last season. Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk
I know the coaching team were really excited about Sessi. Let's hope he has recovered from that awful injury and can be ready to go with a full preseason. Same with Williams and Aidy White if they sign on again. All 3 young lads just bloody unlucky with injuries. Can't see them being on big money so be nice to see if, with a full preseason, they can overcome the issues.
In the Simon Davey days we had a good foreign recruitment. Would be good to extend the current recruitment set up abroad - places like Argentina and Scandinavia. And with Hecky in charge then owt could happen.
Would love to get someone like Klas-Jan Huntelaar from Schalke 04. He scored last week in his first game for months. A Fjortoft kind of centre forward and been one of my favourite Dutch players for years. Wonder how much it would take?
Last time we looked abroad wasn't really succesful. That Hungarian guy, the Argentinian and da silva (who was already over here) were probably the best of a really bad bunch and a fortune spent
There are currently two problems with signing players from the EU. Basically, they cost ~10% more than they did a year ago due to the fall in the £ and their wages are worth relatively less. Secondly, seeing as we probably won't be signing experienced internationals, can we guarantee that they will be able to continue playing after 31/3/19? - We could find ourselves with a player that is unable to work in the country.
I hope we are looking abroad, to be honest, they can come from anywhere at the right price, the right wage level, as long as they're ultimately good enough and ideally improve the squad. My gut feeling is that we've had more dud signings from abroad than successful ones. But when we get it right, such as Muller, De Zeeuw in particular, they've been spectacularly good. Even Ferenzci, Bosancic, Marcelle were good value. Am I right in thinking we also got a good defender from Iceland/Finland (Janne Salli) was it, who only played a handful of games before getting a career ending injury away at Leeds in the cup?
