nothing in this game is certain - but it's worth a little punt!! sometimes the rumours of managers being seen can be taken with a large bag of salt!! if it comes good, I'll buy you a pint!
Fools and their money, etc. Sky will pay out on Agnew if he completes 10 games in charge...You need Schteeve to be appointed before the weekend!
Yup, correct. It was based on our poor form in the last two or three months of the 1995/96 season, as well as selling many of our established, regular first team players of the decade in the close season (top scorer Andy Payton, Lee Butler, Charlie Bishop, Brendan O'Connell, Owen Archdeacon).
Selling our Number 1 striker and top scorer to our local rivals, who play in blue & white stripes? Ah, I remember those comments from that Summer as if it were yesterday:- "They don't want to go up"; "The board have no ambition and are only interested in being a selling club"; "How can it be regarded as improvement when we're replacing Andy Payton with Paul Wilkinson?"; "Replacing established Division 1 players with has-beens, players from the bottom Division and unknown foreigners? Relegation guaranteed!"; "If Thompson isn't good enough for Ipswich, he isn't good enough for Barnsley!". And so on and so forth.
As Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr famously said when discussing Barnsley FC in the 19th Century "plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose" one thing is for certain though - the bookies have had us favourites for relegation from the championship pretty much every season we have been in it since we exited Admin
Ah, I've won a lot of money betting on next managers from tips like these (which has largely offset my own terrible betting choices!) so I was straight in there with a little bet. But it looks like Sky have this stitched up with the 10 caretaker game rule. To be fair, when I bet on Hecky and Tommy Wright seperately the other season they paid on both. Couldn't believe it. Does it also work the same 10 game caretaker way on betfair?
Absolutely spot on. Didn't we sell/swap Rammell for Dave Regis and £100k in the spring of 96 too? Sent from my SM-T710 using Tapatalk
To be fair though, in the summer of 1996 we had a Mr Robert Robson of Porto and Barcelona as our Chief Scout!
Give over. We bought two strikers with 100 league goals each, most of them in the top division. Of course people were excited. Can you imagine signing Peter Crouch and Jermaine Defoe now? People would jizz their load!
Payton was younger and scored more goals than Wilkinson, who had hardly played during the previous couple of seasons for Middlesbrough, as they'd been splashing the cash on big name foreign forwards. A lot of people (namely the ones who never had a good thing to say about the club) WEREN'T excited, as proved by our low attendances. However, once we'd won promotion the regular asinine comment was "No one's happier than I am!", quickly followed by "Seeing as you're a season ticket holder can you get me one for next season?" We didn't sign Hendrie until October.
If that is correct IS [unfortunate acronym] then I admit I've missed that. However, if you didn't catch the detail of my earlier posts, I've been able to get all of £1 on. That is because my record with Skynobet has led to them reducing the stakes on anything I try to back with them. So I think your "fools and their money" quip perhaps needs to be seen in this light, thanks.
Looking on sky. It does say "next permanent manager" So anyone putting a bet on it and they then refuse to pay if he's appointed in say 3 months time (without a permanent in between). Then that's surely false advertising in terms of a bet that someone clearly thought was being placed. Irrespective of a temp manager being in charge for 20 games for example
there's a big orange banner under the bet showing the 10 game stipulation. I think it's because of the lack of clarity over when a manager becomes 'permanent'
