What are you most distinctive senses (sounds, smells, etc) of the bygone days? Nothing personal. I'm back on with putting together reminiscence boxes for people with Dementia, and am trying to capture the scents / feelings from childhood. Thinking things like: Brylcreem Brut/ Old Spice Izal Toilet Paper Lavender perfume Quick Touch (Avon) Coal fires Semolina etc What was that soap that shifted everything (caustic or something?)
The sound of the fire station siren is something you could hear for miles when I was a kid in the 70s. Reminded me of end of dad's army lol Paraffin and firelighters ln winter and the smell of the newly polished floor in assembly on the first day back at school. Night games at oakwell and the smell of beer and bovril mixed with smoke from cigars, pipes and cigarettes. If you lived in hemsworth and the surrounding villages, the smell of the turkey farms. Ok, another question, (as I've never smoked). If I was to buy some tobacco to recapture that fresh tobacco smell from pipes, and put it in a tin, so folks could open it and get a sniff of it, what do I look for? I remember my dad having pipes, but have no idea what it was. Need it to be authentic. Nowt dodgy from Amsterdam!!
Condor was always advertised as pipe tobacco back in the day Hamlet cigars as well. Sent from my SM-G850F using Tapatalk
The smell of freshly baked bread walking past Jones"s bakery in Elsecar & the smell of smoke/smut from the steam engines when they passed through the station.
We always had Wrights Coal Tar soap - smelled ace and/or Camay soap. Always remember the sound of the gas poker lighting the coal fire on a frosty morning and me mam baking a ton of bread every Monday morning - most didnt see a Tuesday!!
The hooter from Houghton main pit echoing across the fields and the pit buses picking up the workers for the next shift.
This isn't being crude, genuinely, especially as your reasons for this are based on a good cause. But, whatever happened to white dog ****? And when you ran over it with the lawnmower it disappeared in a puff of smoke. Sent from my iPod touch using Barnsley FC BBS Fans Forum

Dunno if it's a "shaggy dog" tale, but I heard that was down to the diet. Sent from my SM-G850F using Tapatalk
My wife has frontotemporal dementia she's only 54 we've been battling this evil disease for 5 years now and over that time I've learned that her senses have dulled but, she really enjoys tastes and the feel if things from her childhood a very simple meal such as beans in toast or chips fish fingers and peas. Also the feel of a very soft teddy bear which she has with her at all times, I can't tell which smells give her pleasure although a freshly run bath seems to put a smile on her face, as for sound, music is a big part of our lives and we sing along to many old favourites from our youth. Any sensory stimulant you find to give pleasure to a person struck by dementia is a massive tonic. Good luck in your endeavours.
