This forum is excellent. Marley Watkins is a great player, until he decides he's leaving, then he's bang average. I'm sad to see him leave, and I think we'll have difficulty replacing him. He's often played out wide, and rarely have we had a wide player give as much effort or score and assist as many goals as Marley has. The writing was obviously on the wall for a while, but to say he was average smacks of sour grapes to me. He was definitely better than average. Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk
On a pitiful budget is the main point. There's an entire pre-season before next season, we are going to sign players. Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk
We had moulded a side in L1 that kept us up. We now have sold/lost that team without any funds to replace em. The writing us not only on the wall it's underlined.
No-one's doubting we are going to sign players. It's how influential they are going to be in August that's the issue.
The hardest element to replace for me is the energy and enthusiasm that both Watkins and Scowen showed. They both have incredible tenacity and determination coupled with no lack of pace to win both the first and second balls. They hunt the opposition down and make hopeful or even poor balls into half chances. Scowen covered every blade of grass whilst Watkins kept every defender he faced on his toes or 90 minutes. That's what you really need when facing better teams and better players most weeks in the Championship. I think we can repalce both players in terms of purely footballing ability. D'Almeida looked to be able to pass the ball as well as Scowen. I'm damn sure we can bring in a forward who can convert as many chances as Watkins did. But I find it less likely that replacement players will have that hunger and drive to continually run and run and make up for the possible quality gap we may be up against in a lot of matches next season.
The Wembley promotion team was dismantled but we signed players and continued the good work and we will do so again.
The likelihood is that we are going to be raiding League 1 at best. It was their second season before the likes of Winnall and Hourihane started firing on all cylinders.
It's not an exact science though. By the same token, Andy Yiadom and Angus MacDonald made a bigger step up and have looked largely comfortable. I just feel that far too many are writing us off and the season has barely ended. A different squad might not necessarily be a worse squad. Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk
Okay so one poster has described him as 'average', another as 'alright' in this thread. We're splitting hairs really. Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk
Whether any of us have said that or not Archey, we're no different to any other set of fans when one of their popular players leaves. That doesnt make it right of course, but Its just a defensive mechanism that we all have as fans, and its a way of getting used to the fact that another player has left.
I agree, the common football fan is a fickle beast. I'd be lying if I said I am any different. Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk
Reading DB & P of R threads in context isn't criticising Marley in anyway, l read them as being quite complimentary.
Both Watkins and Scowen are both established Championship quality players, they are the best signings we could make. Now this is only a guess, but I reckon we haven't offered them both what they are worth. We should have pushed the boat out, they have shown this season they are worth it.
