3 natural number 10s would suggest we're looking at going in some variant of the 4-5-1 next season. Not necessarily a bad thing. The lack of strikers on the market at the minute may force us into it. Last summer the 'red hot' strikers who were potentially in our reach were Winnall, Armstrong, Bradshaw, Madden, Grigg and Gregory. We were lucky enough to have 3/6 of them. This year theres Sharp, Vaughan and Gregory in good form non of whom are likely to be targets. The lack of goalscorers with potential has dipped drastically with only a handful showing great form last season. Omar Bogle got a lot of attention before his move but that was partly down to there being little else. We've seen how hard the step up can be with Bradshaw and Armstrong struggling for form. Theres a few in league 2 with good form but other than James Collins at Crawley I wont claim to know too much about them. Our age policy narrows the market further. Its very early days but maybe looking at a front man with a great touch and link up play will be the target this summer as whilst Bradshaw is a great finiaher andselfless worker his touch isn't great and he struggles to get hold of the ball. I'd like to see a forward in who gets more involved in all round play as as we've seen 20 goals in League One doesn't guarantee double figures in the Championship. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
There isn't a lack of strikers on the market though, it is a myth just like the myth that there are no good players over 23 available. They haven't all disappeared off the face of the planet have they.
Scunny manage to find a goalscorer virtually every season. They must have a player every other season hitting 20 goals. We get one every 15 years. MacLean, Sharp, Hooper, Madden, Morris & Winnall off the top of my head
To be fair, Scunny spend most seasons in either L1 or L2 though. Finding 20 goals a season strikers at this level is very difficult. Not happened for us in my lifetime, although a few went close. And the other issue? If we have a striker looking likely to score 20 in a season, we lose them in January. See Winnall.
From what ive seen of bradshaw he lacks the confidence to hit the ball with his first shot .gets in the right positions . lacks a bit of confidence to just not hesitate .Could be a different more accomplished player when hecky has had a pre season to work with him.
Its not a myth though. League One 15/16 season 6 strikers hit 20+ goals and 3 hit over 15-19 goals. League One 16/17 season 2 strikers hit 20+ goals and 4 hit 15-19 goals. Those six strikers are Sharp, Vaughan, Gregory, Cox, Taylor and Henderson. Sharp and Taylor aren't happening. Cox, Vaughan and Henderson dont fit the policy and Gregory who would possibly be considered is very unlikely. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
But that is a VERY narrowed down selection of players. Only searching one league and only players who were first team regulars with a certain goalscoring record.
Ollie Watkins is a good forward and matches the age profile. Might need to sell a couple of Barry's biscuits to afford him though. Sent from my iPad using Barnsley FC BBS Fans Forum
In all fairness most of their strikers have later gone on to perform at a higher level. Though at the same time I agree with you. Sent from my iPad using Barnsley FC BBS Fan Forum mobile app
But what I'm saying is its easier to guarantee good hold up play and a solid touch than it is to predict a player will score goals. Huddersfield, Wednesday and Fulham dont have a striker who has scored over 12 goals for them but they all have strikers with excellent link up play. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I would think Matt Godden from Stevenage would be someone we are looking at..... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_Godden 35 goals in 75 matches for Ebbsfleet. Signed a one year contract at Stevenage where he scored 20 goals in just 33 games, thus showing he could make the step up despite not playing for one of the best sides in league two. Nothing to suggest he can't make another step up and being out of contract makes taking a punt on him look a decent option.
I'm not so sure about that either. We have had a lot of absolutely dross midfielders who are supposed to be good at that job over the years.
Aye, whoever is involved in their recruitment regards forwards knows his stuff. Same used to be said for Peterborough but the last couple of years it's begun to unravel a bit down there.
Alan Nixon was linking him today with a three million pound move to Derby County. He's scored a dozen goals in division four, might not get the achievement of a promotion and only done it one season. If they get that amount for him that's excellent business.
Personally reckon we will see a gem from within develop next year. Brown has all the makings of a great player with the right Nurturing. Payne hit form at Shrewsbury once he got fit again and their fans want him next year. Also young brad ash. Gone out on loan to National South and scored a goal every other game from, often, a midfield position. In fact Weston Super Mares club website lists him as a midfielder. He's only 20. Would be keen to hear what our coaches think of him or if he gets a chance in pre season. Finally Elliot Lee. Has plenty of talent. He's a Lee Tomlin type player. Who knows - not sure what's prevented him getting more minutes this year but looked good in his little cameo. Strikers often just need a run in the team and a couple of goals to boost confidence. If one or more got their chance and had a purple patch, then reckon they all have the talent to be good players. Other than perhaps goalkeeper, reckon striker is the position where confidence plays a huge factor in performance. We have a lot of talent already at the club. A lot of work will have gone into getting players who rarely featured in the first team this year ready for stepping up if needed or ready next year. I may be an idiot but can't help but feel optimistic about our great little club, and excited to see what happens next year. Reckon there will be a few stand out performers none of us expected. Like Yiadom & McDonald this year.
He can talk about 3 million quid all he likes. He's out of contract and they won't get more than 500 grand at tribunal. Sent from my iPad using Barnsley FC BBS Fan Forum mobile app
I'm not particularly downbeat myself but can't say I see any of our current strikers (Bradshaw included) getting into double figures next season and of the ones we have I can only see Tom getting more than 2 or 3. I'd be more than happy to be wrong though. Sent from my iPad using Barnsley FC BBS Fan Forum mobile app
Aye, l know but we've done a fair few seasons in League 1 over the past 15 years and we've only had Winnall score 20 plus. They can't half spot a goalscorer.
I don't think anyone expects it, which is why I reckon we're in for a couple of quality strikers. But still think at least one of the lads we've got on the books already will step up next year.
