Exactly the kind of physical centre forward that we have been lacking since the days of Paul Wilkinson and Neil Shipperley.

    Would be a great signing

He has to go somewhere, and if we don't then Burton or Bradford will.

I reckon he's on a fair few bob so I can't see either of those two going in for him.

    Maybe back to Ipswich.

I reckon the large majority of players in this division, good or bang average would have to take a drop in wages to play for us.

My sons mate who supports the Reds lives up there. According to some in the boozer where he sups at 34 he's still got something to offer and they'd want circa 1.8 million for him.! For me with wages and his age it's a non starter.!

I'd like him up front for us but wages put him out of reach.

We've had a few in that time and we haven't always needed one.

Ashley Ward, Fjortoft, O'Grady and Ferenczi were all good forwards for us in their time.

I'd take O'Grady back - 1 year deal. No chance with Murphy

Just because they are on more money at another club doesn't mean they won't take a pay cut to come here to play.
Didn't John Hendrie and Paul Wilkinson come here on half their wages? Hundreds of pros are out of contract and won't be able to command massive wages.

Paul Wilkinson - 34 years old
John Hendrie - 34 years old
Neil Redfearn - 31 years old
Neil Thompson - 34 years old

Age at the time we got promoted in 1997. And talk to any of the younger lads in that squad - Eaden, Moses, Watson etc - and they will tell you how much of a massive help they were to them not only those seasons but also the rest of their careers.

I understand the 'saleable asset' strategy but when we're not selling them & they're being allowed to run down their contract, we might as well consider the right experienced pros rather than discarding them. I think he'd be a good signing but I know nowt.

The experienced players signed during the January & Summer transfer windows of 2014 certainly appears to have influenced the club's subsequent transfer policy. They can use the success of winning the JP Trophy, winning promotion and finishing in our highest position since 2000 as proof of the success of the approach.
However, I think if Hecky wanted to bring in the modern day equivalent of a Hendrie, Wilkinson or Thompson (for example), I'd be both surprised and disappointed with the club if they went against his wishes. On the other hand, if he DOESN'T want to bring in experience, then that's good enough for me.

    4 goals in 37 games: http://www.soccerbase.com/players/player.sd?player_id=34857&season_id=144

    2 goals in 26 games: http://www.soccerbase.com/players/player.sd?player_id=34857&season_id=145

    1 goal in 26 games: http://www.soccerbase.com/players/player.sd?player_id=34857&season_id=149

7 goals in the 3 years since leaving us and played 89 games to get that. He scores 1 goal every dozen games on average, and been on loan at three different clubs none of which wanted to keep him long term. This summer he will probably end up at a lowly league one side such as back at Bury.

Why would someone want us to sign him back? Just curious because it must be because of what he did for us one season half a decade ago. If we were after a striker with them figures who hadn't previously played for us, nobody would be asking for him to be signed.

Only 3 years ago that he left. Different type of forward to what we've got.
We know what he can do, and he's more likely to do it with a proper run in the team. Didn't seem to get settled at Brighton or Forest.

Also, good experience and seems like a good bloke. If free and cheap, sign him up. Plus two young strikers.

He's a striker so his number one job is to score goals. In the second half of the season goals really dried up for us. Hecky didn't have faith in Payne, Watkins couldn't get a regular position in his prefered position and Bradshaw hasn't made the step up to championship football as well as we'd have hoped. Putting COG up front wouldn't solve our goal problem.

One of his jobs is to score goals, but it's not the be and end all.

I think someone like him or Payne would have helped Bradshaw.
