From Wikipedia: Barnsley[edit] He left Victoria Park in March 2004, and later in the month signed a short-term contract with Paul Hart's Barnsley, also of the Second Division.[24] He played nine games for the "Tykes", to finish the campaign with 39 appearances spread across three different clubs. On 10 August 2004, Shuker scored both of Barnsley's goals in a 2–1 win over Bristol City at Oakwell.[25] He continued to impress, though was sent off in a 2–2 draw with Swindon Town on 23 October, after what the club website described as a "ridiculous refereeing decision".[26] Playing despite sufferering from mumps,[27] he ended the 2004–05 League One campaign with eight goals in 48 games, including a 30-yard strike against Peterborough and a "beautiful volley" against Stockport County.[28][29] For his performances, the club named him 'Player of the Season' and eventually offered him a new one-year contract, which he signed "after weeks of uncertainty".[30][31][32] Barnsley won promotion under Andy Ritchie in 2005–06, and Shuker played a total of 57 competitive games in league and cup competitions, and was an ever-present in the league. He scored a total of ten goals, including braces against Oldham Athletic and Swindon Town; Barnsley won every game in which Shuker found the net. He played in both legs of the play-off semi-final win over Huddersfield Town, and also played in the Millennium Stadium final, scoring a penalty in the shoot-out victory over Swansea City.[33] He was offered a new contract,[34] however the club withdrew the offer after four weeks; Shuker said that "the manager wanted me back, the lads as well, it seems the chairman is running the club, picking the players. Money wasn't the issue, I turned down an extra £500 from another club because I wanted to stay."[35] A year later, former teammate Daniel Nardiello also criticized Chairman Sheperd, saying "He's made promises to me in the past and not kept them, but I never made a fuss and just got on with things. I didn't like the way he treated my mate Chris Shuker a couple of seasons ago either.
"Thelordsmy" Shepherd once said that he was earmarking players for Andy Ritchie to sign, but he didn't want them. Strange situation that. Sent from my SM-G850F using Tapatalk
I do seem to recall at the time - and if someone has the time to trawl back through the archives I'm more than happy to concede this could be the mandela effect - the emphasis was more like we've made money available if Ritchie want's to buy Ronaldo - but Ritchie reckons Marc Richards and Tommy Wright are better than him. To be fair I loved watching Ritchies Barnsley - but recall raising an eyebrow or two about the players that we had been linked to - but we didn't want because Dale Tonge would keep them warming the bench. (although at the moment I can't name any of said players which kind of undermines my arguement)
Loved shukes though. I can remember him playing against us for Hartlepool at oakwell. He was full of attitude and our fans hated him. Shortly after that we signed him and we all forgave him Sent from my SM-G850F using Tapatalk
I rated Shuker. Always gave 100%. Sorry when he left us to be honest. Beats me how any Manager worth his salt could let his Chairman pick his team.!
Wasn't part of the reason that Ritchie was sacked was due to a failure to sign Chris Luketti and Danny Cademateri. I recall speaking to an ex player in MacDonalds of all places, can't recall for the life of me who the player was, but hinted the reason he wasn't playing regularly was down to Shepherd. Had my first lunch in the executive (Now Legends) suite pre match. It was a wild windy day and I was thankful that we were both 'indoors'. The only downside to an excellent meal, was Chris Shuker, who tore our left side to pieces.
Yes, remember that. Was it the same game that Ritchie Humphries should have been sent off in for headbutting (I think) Neil Austin whilst Austin was taking a throw in? Sent from my Moto G (4) using Tapatalk
shepherd..lol ...the reason Blackwell walked out of his interview ..when shepherd told him ..weve got about 5 players lined up to join and blackwell replied ...Im sorry mr chairman but i thought the managers job was that he high lighted the players he wanted, brought it to the boards attention and the board then either said yes or no, then went out and got them....shepherds snapped back ...Not at this club lad........Meeting over then said Blackwell and without further do , got up and walked out....lol....... Phew....in this particular case we dodge a bullet well done Gordon
Wasn't shepherd working on behalf of Patrick cryne? I'm sure heard similar complaints about the 'chairman' wanting to run the team when Don Rowing was here. And when Ben Mansfield was here And when Linton Brown was here. In fact all the chairmen or ceo's employed by Patrick Cryne have had that claimed about them at some point or other.
If I recall didn't we make the offer to Shuker and he said that he wanted time to look at other offers we gave him a date that he needed to respond by and never did so we let him go then he came crawling back when a better offer wasn't avail to him but too late. decent lad as well - the lad I went to the Cardiff Play off final with bumped into him the day after the game in a club in Liverpool - Shuker bought him his drinks for the night and gave him and all his mate's a lift home
