Agreed Tiler but if, as is rumoured, he's off to QPR or somewhere similar then the very top of our wage band is going to be well short of what they'll offer him.
Exactly. Bang on. The moment clubs with 20k-30k gates, and billionaire owners, are in for our players our wage structure is a busted flush. It's exactly the same as when st mirren players come to us. Or even Wycombe who we pinched Scowen and Mawson off for a few quid.
Rather a medium sized fish than a little tiddler. Some on this board would have us putting on a fin and swimming with the sharks. Even though one bad bite would be the end of us...
Interesting view direct from Luton's chairman on their website. Nails it for me. Frustrating as it is. What’s important is how we reinvest this income to continue to develop our squad.” Sent from my SM-T710 using Tapatalk
Just had a look through Grenville Firth's book " The Who's Who of Barnsley FC." It was published in 2011 and features every player to play for the Club up to that time. POR is correct Hristov £1.5 and Ward £1.3 million are the two most expensive signings we have made. Simon Davey signed Hume for £1.2 million in 2008. Jan Aage Fjortoft joined us from Sheffield United for £750k in 1998 and John Hendrie paid Aberdeen £ 750k to sign Craig Hignett. The day before our first game in the Premiership against West Ham United Danny Wilson paid Bristol City £750k for Darren Barnard. During my time watching the Reds he scored one of the best goals I've seen at Oakwell in the 7-1 drubbing we gave out to Huddersfield Town.
I'm happy with the fee, big lad goal scoring midfielder plenty of assists. 3 year deal people wanted us to pay 1million for bogle this lad is going places really good signing imo
It was " rumoured" that his demands weren't over the top. Two likely scenarios either he was made an offer but decided he wanted to move on unless we were prepared to improve it or we believed we had offered him a fair salary and that we've got someone equally as good or better lined up. Time alone will give us our answer.
Bruce Dyer was 750k as well I think. I never really rated him as player thoroughly splendid human being though. Sent from my iPad using Barnsley FC BBS Fan Forum mobile app
I'm assuming we offered him £8k. QPR I'm guessing will have offered him £10-£12k, plus the chance to get back down south, which if he is homesick is fair enough. Crap move football-wise though.
You are right JBP. Grenville Firths book says we signed him in 1999 from QPR for £1.5 million. Didn't realise we'd paid that much for him. QPR had signed him from Stoke for £2.75 million.! Checked on his strike partner Neil Shipperley. Bassett paid Forest £ 700k for him in July 1999.
Of course we can't offer what they can, that's why they're way over a hundred million in debt. If we'd matched our wage cap for who I believe is the best player at the club and he said no then fair play. The bloke does 2 men's work in the same game and we'll miss him like **** next season. Who'll fill his boots, mowatt?
Look at the last guy we signed with a broken leg, he went on to write himself in to BFC folklore - Richard Kell. Legend.
Broken foot, I think. And I'm pretty sure the recurrence of said injury was not done on a football pitch.
Richard Kell by the way is now a Pilot for one of the Commercial Airlines. Seem to remember a mate at work saying he was up front when they flew to Tenerife. Glad he was OK up front 'cos from what I can remember of him he wasn't very good at the back.!!
Was on a flight a few weeks ago when the fatal words 'welcome to the flight I am your captain George Michael' came over the speaker. If he's faked his own death I hope he's laying off the narcotics. Sent from my iPad using Barnsley FC BBS Fan Forum mobile app
