All or most of the negative stuff that fans say about England FC is true to be honest and I dont disagree with it. I wish I could argue with it as a 100% England fan, but I cant and Im honest enough to say they let us and themselves down in almost every single tournament. Xerxes, thats a very important time for the England team you mentioned there (the early-mid 90s). And while I wont speak ill of the late Graham Taylor, that time when Bobby Robson stepped down after Italia '90, was a massive missed opportunity for our national team to go on and actually achieve something. I genuinely believe that!
Well for me its easy, whilst it would be nice if England won the world cup it has nothing on the promotions I have seen for us over the years. - Only concern for me is whether promotion to the Premier league would actually be a good thing! Happy to take the chance though Bizarrely our promotion odds this season are 40-1 but I would have thought that us being promoted is more likely than England winning the world cup current odds 18-1 (Bookies are all convinced Burton and Barnsley will be 2 of the bottom 3 sides looking at the relegation odds - I do hope they are wrong on both again)
I don't really care either way about England, I'd like to see them do well but if they lose, it doesn't ruin my day/night!
I'd love to see England win the world cup or the Euros, but watching Barnsley get promoted beats it every time. Wouldn't trade that 15/16 season for anything.
When we won the World Cup in 1966 the entire squad were apart from the young Alan Ball all well established players in their respective Club sides. The Premiership is now saturated with foreign players to the point that some of the so called "stars" of the England set up are not even guaranteed a place in their Club side. Daniel Sturridges form can best be described as fitful, Joe Hart has had to move to Italy to get a regular game and John Stones has been in and out of what was a relatively inconsistent Man City team last season. If these types of players are not playing week in week out in what is championed as the best league in the World is it unreasonable for any of us to expect them to be able to perform at the highest standard at international level.?
I'd honestly take Barnsley starting next season with a 3 point head start over England winning the world cup. Over the years I have gradually fallen out of love with the national team. Continuous underperformance, players who look like they really don't give a ****, Rooney having a go at the fans for booing when the team was awful etc. It all arises from the greed of the Premier League and we'll be trapped in the same old cycle until the league eats itself and we go back to a setup where English players play top level flight football at an early age rather than being loaned to Vitesse for 3 years. Just look at Germany to see how to do it - their young reserve team in the Confederations Cup last night would eat our overpaid prima donnas for breakfast. It's sad when I remember the pride and excitement I felt in the 90s. I hope I will have those feelings again at some point but I can't see it happening with the current setup.

The EPL is probably the fourth best league in Europe - Italy, Spain and Germany are probably better overall and France isn't far behind. With the money they've got to spend on players and managers, expect China, and possibly Qatar and the UAE to be challenging within the next 5-10 years. Not sure about the overall level of Brazil or Argentina, but the champions of both normally give the Champions League winners a good game.
