as a participation sport in this country is a great thing. However, the one downside I have noticed is that there is a lot less camaraderie than there used to be. When I first started going with my Dad everyone would nod and say hello to us. Seems like less than half do these days. If you go to a cycling cafe you will still tend to strike up a conversation but not so much out on the road. Have any other long term cyclists noticed this? No need to reply if you don't cycle.
Well that was a much simpler answer than I expected. I didn't know if they sold cycling merchandise or had something specific about the cafe itself that made it a cycle cafe. As for the nodding thing, I tend to find that in general the busier something is the less friendly people become. Pass one person in the street and you will say hello, pass 100 and you don't tend to. Perhaps the cycling thing is the same?
A café frequented by lycra clad types winking at each other...probably bairning about the shoddy signage above the door...
I'm new to it but find people pretty friendly but I have nothing to compare against as I've only been doing it for a couple of months. A man walks into a pub with 2 black lines painted down his body. Barman says to bloke at the bar 'don't talk to him he's a cycle path' Sent from my iPad using Barnsley FC BBS Fans Forum
Varies Conan I think, and you're about right I think, it's 50/50. I only took up cycling in 2011 though, so can't really offer a view from years gone by. Rode out from Carlton to York and back today and to be fair the vast majority acknowledged me and my mate, and vice versa. There is definitely an "ar$e up, head down" tendency though like you say. One thing I have noticed though is that the young kids who are out riding, be they with family or in a club group, always say hello or ring their bell. Family cycling seems to be increasingly popular.
Been out today, fifty odd miles, I nod / say o'reyt to every one I pass (or passes me), whether they're on a racer, mountain bike, hybrid or what ever. I usually find that the more cyclists are "into it" with their fancy £2, 3, 4K or more bikes, the more snooty and ignorant they are. Incidentally, beware of cycling through Dobcross - full of total knob head drivers.
Agree about insurance, but they pay as much road tax as other zero-emissions road users (such as electric cars) so that's fine by me
I don't pay "road tax" or "emissions tax" for my car. Cars, and most motorised vehicles are permitted to use the road under license. Lose your license, you can still use your bike. I can see merit in having insurance, but where does insurance become compulsory though? Kids using their bikes for laiking around on included? Am I right in thinking that certain levels of club riders have to be insured for time trialling, some timed road events etc?
Only just started cycling again , planning on commuting to work so wanted to do a practice run from Wummers. Everyone I passed outside Sheffield said hello, morning etc etc. As soon as i hit Sheff i got **** all off anyone. Miserable deedars.
What's your opinion on those who cycle on pavements normally at speed endangering pedestrians. I don't mean kids either I mean adults.
I had a rant on Strava about Southern cyclists last month ( I bring my push iron down with me). Mostly friendly up North overall. Would be good to follow you on Strava chaps. Sent from my SM-T800 using Tapatalk
Not sure this will work, this was my rant against southeners https://www.strava.com/activities/956481432/shareable_images/map_based?hl=en-US&v=1493063283 Sent from my SM-T800 using Tapatalk
