Academy strikers

We don't seem to produce many decent young strikers.

Danny Rose is the only recent one who's made any sort of impact on the first team, and yet he was eventually sold on to a lower league opponent.

Noble Lazarus had the potential but was probably forced to do too much too young. Going back a little further, only Steven Bennett around 8 years ago is the only academy striker I can recall ever getting a number of first team appearances, even then he was only limited to about 10 from the bench.

We're going as far back as John Parkin before we find a Barnsley academy striker who actually made it in the top 2 divisions, and even then, it was a while after us before he did.

The point of my post is this:

Is Jacob Brown the exception to the rule. I've read good reports regarding him over the last couple of games. Could he finally be the young breakthrough Barnsley striker we've lacked since John Parkin.

This isn't me saying we don't need more strikers, we clearly do.

On very limited evidence, I think that he should be regularly on the bench and let's take it from there. Certainly does not look overwhelmed and is capable of making an impact. Not lacking confidence, nor skill either. Give him a chance.

 

My worry is that he is only playing because we are so short of strikers and that he will be pushed out in favour of a few loanees instead.
I think that has been the biggest reason that nobody has made the step up, we are so quick to give other teams' strikers experience instead of our own so they never get the chance.

 

Jacob was brought up through the ranks at Guiesley so depends what you count really

 

This is the problem in general with football nowadays. I still think we would have been better off giving the likes of Danny Rose and Jordan Clarke a go over say Franck Nouble, Nile Ranger or Chris Wood. Or even Jacob Brown or Brad Ash last season when clearly Adam Armstrong wasn't the answer.

Apart from Hirst we have produced very few strikers in my time watching Barnsley

 

Who coaches our attackers? Is it Hecky and Clapham who do all first team coaching or do we have specialist coaches supporting?

 

46 appearances in 7 years? do you think that was being forced to do too much? I thought we eased him in with a few appearances at an early age with the view to building up the number as he got older but his development rather stagnated

I'd like to see jacob brown given a chance based in the little i've seen so far

 

I think he played far too many games when he was younger, and suffered many injuries as a result. He never fully recovered and as such, stagnated.

Or some players never really progress for being the best school boy and peak at 16.. we've had tons of em..

Glynn Hurst had an ok career. Andy Liddell, Jordan Rhodes and David Hirst good ones. I think initially the change to the Academy system did us few favours but now it's starting to work well for us

RNL for me only got to play early doors in the first team to distract the media attention from Davey ..Davey for me worst manager weve ever had and that includes spackman...but i wont go down that route ....many know i hated him with a passion....phew i can feel the old blood pressure bubbling lol

 

He played for our U18s having signed at 16 so I think he counts as an academy graduate

 

On the subject of Brown... before folk demand a 10 year deal or think he's worth 20 million. The fact is he's played 2 friendlies. As some keep saying on here.. that friendly results mean sweet FA... Which is of course true, they can be very deceiving, but so can performances. Remembers old Diggers.. used to look like Pele in friendlies. What im saying is, you cant have it both ways, if results have no meaning then half decent performances in a friendly are equally so. They are only pointers

Not saying he's not any good... but the first thing ill get in a proper game is a big kick from experienced a centre-back. A welcome to the Champ young en.....And see what reaction you get.. hide or bring it on... That will tell you more than any 10 friendlies.. And all the above can apply to Mr Ugbo as well

I think trying to big up young lads too early just shows how desperate we are for some experienced attacking options

 

What about the beast? Jon Parkin's had a good career and more of it should have been at Barnsley.

 

I agree with that but I think that friendly performances are an indicator. For example they may just be friendlies but Tom Bradshaw has looked nowhere near first team football in the games I've seen.

 

It's a hard one Archey because we've had so many good players in other area's of the pitch. Goalkeepers, Defenders and attacking midfielders.

We've had a few that ripped it apart at youth level such Nana, Rose. Then players that did well in the youth levels like, Oates and Bennett.

We've had a lot of attacking midfielders do well though. RNL Clark Maris

Theres Tom Clare in the u18's at the moment. Hopefully, he will do well this season.
