It's funny (or mind-bending) to think that during their best periods of form, Andy Rammell and Andy Saville would probably be million pound players today, at least. Saville was not prolific, but was powerful and a great team player, so I'd value him at £2 million in today's market. I wonder what David Currie at his peak and under contract would have been sold for these days? I reckon we'd be looking at £8-£10 million. Mark Roberts - £3.8 million for an excellent, but definitely not a ball-playing centre half. Paul Futcher was arguably a much better footballer than Robbo. Is £10-£15 million unreasonable? In the era when any established second-tier player seems to be worth a million plus, even players like Owen Archdeacon and Brendan O' Connell would have probably changed hands for very serious coin. Edit - scrub that for Currie. 20 goals a season and a thrilling player to watch. He'd be worth £12-£15 easily.
What would the team from the early 80'S be worth, Glavin, Banks, Aylott, Parker et.al. what a team that was.
I'm a few years too young to have seen that time, but friends reckon that Glavin would be worth around £20 million. McCarthy would surely have been transferred for at least that at some point in his career if he'd been playing today.
Straight after relegation from the PL, having had a successful top-flight season, and still been under contract? Around £25 million would be my guess. But unfortunately it would never have got to that stage, as nowadays he'd have left on a free rather than signing a new deal before we ever got promoted to the PL, so that chapter in our history would likely as not never have happened.
Ashley Ward 20 million. Andy Liddell a cheeky 4/5 million De Zeeuw. 10 million Craig Hignett 20 million Nicky Eaden 5 million. Paul Wilkinson would have gone for 3 million so we wouldn't have signed him ditto John Hendrie. It's beyond crazy. We need to get hold of a De Lorean and Christopher Lloyd.
We would t have been promoted in the first place so we could have avoided spending 2 million on Ales Krizan.
I reckon you've way under-valued De Zeeuw. The only defender we've had since the late 80's who ever got close to replicating Futch.
We'd have got exactly the same for him. Released on a free because he wasn't value for money by Bassett and replaced with Steve Chettle. We'd have gone up again had we kept him
Let's be right, we'd have cashed in way before then. Theoretically speaking though, £10m is about right for him when we were still in the second tier. After a season in the Prem, I reckon that could be doubled.
Could be wrong but I don't think we paid anything like that for him. In fact, isn't our record still the £1.5m we paid for Hristov?
Tommy Taylor 100 million. Johnny Kelly 30 million. George Robledo. 70 million. Danny Blanchflower 30 million. Best defender bar none Pat Howard 25 million. Yep let's talk money.
