West Hams fans cant believe their luck Sign a player from Man U for £1Million, he does nothing for them and hardly plays and they sell him a year later for £7 million + Sell on apparantly their fans are in party mode! Back to the original post and ignoring all the pages in between of course football is completely broken. At one time all fans could dream that one day they may reach a cup final or the first division - now its only possible if you have a rich owner and for every one that does good things to a club there are another 4 or 5 who make things much worse. As for the way parachute payments are used its just wrong. The idea originally sold was they were to alllow clubs to meet their commitments for contracted players on relegation. But in reality they are used to bankroll a promotion push its probably only a matter of time before other barriers are placed I mean the likes of Bournemouth and Huddersfield in the Prem is a disaster when you have deserving sides like Villa and Forest forced to play with the rabble
That's all well and good but what about if we are relegated before the players reach their potential ability?
Hold on chaps. Fletcher scored 5 goals in 21 games for us in League 1, and failed to score in 16 for West Ham. Paying that much for him smacks of desperation by Middlesbrough. You can't says he's a prolific striker on those figures. Wiki says he has 10 goals in 47 games.
Risk analysis be bolder chasing loan players on permanent contracts. We could be the ones netting 5 million quid for Fletcher if we had been bolder.
All guesswork really regardless of who you sign. Winall, Bradshaw and Armstrong all scored plenty in league one. Only Winall made the step up convincingly. Fletcher made 16 premierleague appearances without a single goal, and hasn't kicked a ball in the championship. He might flourish, or he could be bang average. Must be great to be able to afford to gamble that kind of money, plus his wages.
Garry Monk tried to buy him for Leeds at the start of last season, so I think he knows what Ash is all about.
Could at the same time argue we have lost 5 million quid must be great to be able to afford to lose that sort of money..
Yeah that's all well and good in a perfect world, but in reality if everyone else is in debt and go under, who would we play in our smug new league..
It's all speculation though. If we'd paid £2 million for him and he'd not made the step up, people would have been spitting feathers. I love Fletcher and personally think he'll have no problem adapting to the Championship. But SEVEN million quid for him is completely and utterly loopy, by anyone's standards.
Irony is that he might not get a game for Boro either. They've already spent big on established goalscorers like Braithwaite and Assombalonga. Fletcher is a rookie in comparison so will no doubt start on the bench. See the link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/40741034 If they get off to a flyer he might find himself swapping texts with Winnall every Saturday afternoon
Can't say I disagree. But if we are to move to tbe fabled stage 2 of le grande plan then we need to look at signing some players who impress us on loan. Other than Ryan Williams I can't remember any in recent memory who then went on to sign.
Trouble is whilst playing well on loan for us they impress a whole number of other clubs who can offer more money.
Agree. It's a very fine line though, and as the transfer fees and wages get higher, so do the stakes. I'm glad I'm not the one making the decisions at the top.
