Fantastic. Once went to a " Night with Geoff Boycott" at Sprotborough Cricket Club in Doncaster. "Sir " Geoff showed excerpts on 35 mm film of some of his best ever hundreds for England. I remember it was a long night cos he was talking through the finer points of some of his shots. A perfectionist and one of the truly great batsmen of all time.!
Someones more interested in them than the team. What a joke of a man. Alistair Cook's got 30 hundred at test level. He never goes around saying how great it was for him.
Just to put it into context. When the Great Sachin got 50th hundred in test's he said. "It's just another number but it's nice," said Tendulkar. "Every innings, I want to go out and score runs. I'm very happy that it came at this moment. Saturday was my father's birthday and so I dedicate this hundred to him. That's the first thing I thought of, that I was doing it for him. And also to say thank you for all the fabulous support I have had over the years." The text I get from that. It's just another number, He just wanted to make his Dad happy and probably score runs for the team along with of course saying thanks to the wonderful Indian fans.
Me too. The greatest day of my life pre-Allan Clarke. Who knows what his record would have been, but for his self imposed exile from 1974 to 1977.
I don't think you have any idea how hard GB had to work to achieve what he did. Brought up on uncovered wickets against bowling that was a good deal more hostile than that of today - especially in the mid to late 70's. However I don't imagine for a moment that you will have any concept of what I'm talking about .
I don't have a concept you say, I actually don't care that he worked hard and whatever you or he thinks. He played in a team. The team comes first. Watching this week on Thursday/ Friday Cook battle to 88 was brilliant. Not because it made his avg go up or because it took him to 9th in the all time run scorers list above Alan Border. Because he gave everything for the team. That was better than probably 15 of his hundreds. What he should be thinking if I made 20 or 200 did that help the TEAM win the match. a big score in a lost match means nothing but to someone that puts I before Team. The thing with the likes of Cook, he doesn't give a **** about all the numbers either. He just goes out game in game out and gives everything with the small amount of talent he's got compared to others. Never would put the ECB at any harm or public pressure or ECCC.
If Atherton was acting that I would think he's a disgrace. Atherton like Cook's was a battler. He will say I got a few runs, or a few wickets and make a joke of it and keep humble.
I'm no cricket lover but surely if you get a big score then you have done your best to help the team?
Not always no. you can play at a tempo that will damage the team's efforts. What about if Bairstow comes out and thinks, okay I'm getting red ink to make myself look good. Dean Elgar tonight, will he be happy? All he can think was I tried my best. The 130 he got means very little really.
We need more players that can dig in and grind out an innings at test cricket level - we were crying out for someone in.the second test to hang round. Too many test cricketers are t20 / one day type players - 5 day cricket is a different kettle of fish. Atherton played best test innings I've witnessed by sticking around just like Geoff did. As someone pointed out - I would say batsmen have a much easier job now than when they had to play on uncovered pitches without a short pitch rule. A lot of batsmen today would struggle against - Marshall, Ambrose, Walsh, Kapil Dev, Holding, Thompson, Lillie, Hadlee, Willis, Botham and the likes. I find it incredible that test matches very rarely get to 5 days now
I refer you to my previous comment - no concept. The World didn't start in the 1990's Hemsy and the arguement isn't that Cook's not a good player - it's that I believe you are a poor judge of a great cricketer's talent.
I don't think you even think through what you're writing, you just don't like somebody and that's it, no amount of logic or fact can penetrate. But your stance and attitude is entirely inconsistent - you seem to be basing your entire pathological hatred of one of our greatest ever batsmen on your observation that he wasn't a team player yet you have elevated CR7, as you affectionately call him, to God like status. Everything you post is inconsistent and contradictory. Everything and everyone is judged, not on their record, their success or their appeal to a much wider audience, but simply on whether you like them. It's quite sad really.
It's up's and downs. You are more likely to be given out now. If you listen to bumble he talks about it all the time. Front foot against spin, Bat and pad together. Not out. Loads of tricks and umpires didn't give players out. It's how things change. You can't just grind it out all the time because at some point ones got your name of as they say. Nick Compton at Headingley. Goodness. Sam Robson Gary Ballance Keaton Jennings. But also sometimes the lower guys can't just look at Joe Root playing a shot every other ball because he can do that. You can't. Joe Root could potentially go down and be Englands best ever according to some. It's about been the best you can be for the team.
