6 lovely ladies now living happily in my garden at Wentworth and popping out eggs like nobody's business. Cost me nearly £500 so far, on coops, pen, adoption fees etc. Now I'm fundraising for an on-going health plan. Got a few prints of my Old Oakwell painting left. Top quality, A3 print, £20 including postage. Message me if you would like one. COYR etc..
Chickens are great pets mate, very comical and also very intelligent. Always nice seeing people rescue battery hens, they deserve a good life. Theyll give you years or happiness mate, also years of eggs if they don't get too stressed haha. You'll start to find they all have their own personalities and are very much different from another hen. Ok not sure how much you know about em bud but keep an eye out for lice.... swines they are, they latch into their nesting boxes and hide on perches so make sure you give them a good clean. You'll notice if they get lice as they'll lose feathers, which is sometimes confusing as they shed their feathers and get a new coat for different seasons. All the very best mate, you've made a great decision!
Thanks mate, I've been reading up and all advice welcome. They've settled in well, a bit of squabbling, but nowt serious.. I've got some stuff to protect against red mite etc and I'm hoping the coops are fox and rat proof, should be, the graft that's gone in. Personalities are already coming out, the one named after my Mrs is turning out to be a bit of a nutcase..! I financed it all with my art work and now continuing to build a nest egg (!), should they need any vet treatment and the like. Cheers, C
Now't better than 8tin one of thi own Hen egg's in a morning with a bit of bacon and some tomatoes fried art a thi own greenhouse, Mr C enjoy thi hens mi owd.
Make sure you have some R.I.P Fleas. Look it up on google. It is an aerosol tin that totally and utterly exterminates red mite and other nasty creatures. You can spray it into the hen house, the nooks and crannies, the floor and bedding and on to perches and it kills the bastads very quickly. We used to have hens and it worked a treat. Do not spray it on to the hens themselves. It is great !
Great to see there's an expert on here - the wife and kids want chickens when we move house next month so i might be in touch with some questions
