Are our floodlights really so bad?

What looks good to the eye might not be good enough for precision equipment such as goal line technology. The human eye has a remarkably wide working range.

I remember when we bought new ones funded by the sale of John Beresford (and the ensuing furore), and they were noticeably far, far better than the previous ones. However, I can't say I've noticed us improving the floodlights since then, apart from the fact we've got extra lighting on top of new bits of the ground that didn't exist then. I must admit that I have wondered if we could get away without pylons, at least on the east side of the ground. Not many grounds have old-skool pylons like ours these days, but I must admit I do rather like them.

Not something I've ever given any thought to before but coincidentally I did have the specific thought last night that the light from the floodlights didn't look that great. I actually looked up at the pylons to see if half the bulbs were out.

Is it just the lighting from the 4 pylons that's inadequate for goal-line technology? I looked to the roof of the Ponty end stand from the East Stand and It looks like there's lighting at either end but none more centrally. Perhaps it may be just a case of getting better 'downlighting'from the stand roofs?

We'll probably nip down to B&M and see what they've got.

I don't see how it's the clubs responsibility to make the floodlights bright enough for this ridiculous technology. The FL or the manufacturer should be footing the bill.

Villa do pride themselves on having the brightest lights in the football league. That's not a joke.

Even though I agree with the technology, I do also agree that we should have the necessary work paid for.

Surely this should have been sorted before the start of the season as we all new it was coming in. How long have we known about it I wonder.

    Agree completely.

Did a bit of googling about LED lighting, thinking it would be cheaper in the long run. Apparently Chelsea have full LED lighting, all mounted on the stand, and one of their key selling points for this was that the lighting complied with PFL Broadcast Standards, another area where TV dictates. Presumably we would have to upgrade to comply, should we ever be promoted again?

Rochdale bought our old lights in 1990 ish so god knows what state there in now then. I would imagine that there is a minimum amount of lumens required to meet in the centre circle so the manufacturer's of the equipment should have been required to supply equipment that meets the minimum standards.

Knowing Barnsley, we sold them for less than what they're worth and replaced them with something not quite as good

Was it Villa who used to have their Floodlights arranged into their initials?

That's right there are minimum levels that have to light the pitch though it isn't the centre circle it is uniformly across the entire pitch. They place almost 100 (think it's 80) sensors spread around the pitch and measure the readings to make sure they are all roughly the same and are at a minimum level. It's a different level for each league so when we got promoted 15 months ago they should have been tested by the football league to make sure we met the minimum.

So either we don't meet the minimum standards for the league in which case why not as this should have been noticed when the test was done a year ago or the goal line technology doesn't work at the levels specified for this league in which case wtf are the football league and fa playing at adopting a technology that isn't compatible with their own regulations?

The only other reasoning could be that we JUST meet the regulations when everything is working but because we have some broken bulbs at the moment we fall short
