Two problems with this. 1, it does have a bearing on it as mortgage lenders ask you to declare how much you pay back a month and 2) the phenomenally low rates are part of the problem. The rates are kept low on purpose, and the interest rates increase, so that you never pay it off. Basically, it's a 9% tax increase for graduates for 30yrs. The amount you owe is irrelevant so long as they make the repayments low enough that it'll take you more than the 30yrs to repay it all.

Can't believe some think it doesn't have an impact - it's an outgoing and you have to declare it ... not just that you have no money to put away for a deposit

I understand that they are thinking it doesn't count as 'bad debt' as such, as it's not due to reckless overspending. However, it still counts as an outgoing meaning the amount they are prepared to lend is smaller as you don't have as much disposable income to spend each month.

It's fairly simple, the people who do well at school can't wait to get out. This leaves people who have no respect for education because their families never had respect for it.

Well I have tried to do my bit in the past.

I am born and bred Barnsley council estate (dad was a miner and then a factory worker at Shaw Carpets). I was fortunate enough to go to University, followed by a teaching career.

I became in charge of an educational centre near Cambridge where we provided courses to 6th form students free of charge. I invited Barnsley Sixth Form college to send students to sample what uni life and teaching could be like. We welcomed Barnsley students for about 12 years until I left. (I believe they charge for such courses now).

How can it be free if she's working - you start with 30k you are going to find it difficult to pay for a mortgage. You claimed I didn't know what I was talking about - it is counted towards a mortgage application and people are finding it hard to get on the property ladder

Mate I didn't claim that you didn't know what you was taking about . I think you're a teacher aren't you ? All I'm saying is that not everyone believes higher education should be FOC. I certainly don't and you certainly do so we might as well agree to disagree .

But I've been to Uni, done a post grad and got a graduate job, all from a working class "poor" background. Wealth's no longer a barrier to learning and self betterment.

The attitude of the parents expectations on their children is the biggest factor, end of story. Most kids can achieve, but they need to be brought up to believe in themselves and the value of getting a good education.

You quoted my post and said some people don't know what they are talking about - how was I to think anything else. Made up your daughter got herself sorted - still don't think it's right they come out with a massive debt - especially as these Mp's had it free of charge

    What?

The OP is about people from the town and poor families in particular not standing a chance but I'm saying that's not strictly correct. It's more a cultural and ideological issue within those communities rather than a wealth issue in 2017 imho.

Its only repayable once they start earning above 21k a year . After that it's only going to cost them around £40 a month bargain in my book . Work hard you'll be fine don't rely on anyone else .

Well it's certainly factored into the risk analysis of the lenders.
