If we had a successful winning plan and style of play at 442 why are we playing different systems. I know we had a successful run with Mark Burton on a different system but surely 442 has been best for us.
We played 4-4-2 in the first two games of the season and shipped 6 goals, three of those against Morecambe who cut through us like butter in the second half.
Yes and we lost a lot of games in league 1 on 442 but eventually came good 2nd half of season by sticking to plan. Maybe a bit more time needed for Hecky to get round pegs round holes....
That is true but counter to that 4-4-2 50% win rate Conceded 6 in 2 Scored 5 in 2 4-5-1 33% win rate Conceded 4 in 3 Scored 3 in 4 So 4-4-2 has a poorer defensive statistic but superior goal scoring statistics and a superior win rate.
All very complicated for stats as if we had played different teams with the same formations then the outcome could have been totally different but good counter ...lol
The win was 4-3 against Morecambe, it's not quite the same as 2-1 against Forest. Do you think we have the midfield players to play 4-4-2? I think we'd get destroyed if we play that. Personally I think we'd still lose the midfield battle if we played 6 in midfield such are their defensive shortcomings. SO far this season our best defensive midfielder has been Adam Hammill, by some distance, which tells us all we need to know.
If you look at duels won/interceptions defensive element on stats for saturday we were very good but i feel the forrmation may have lead to the extended pressure Sheff put on us our attacking shooting stats were poor, how can you win games if your not imposing your attacking threat on the opposition ......may win on the odd counter but with one up top u have to be extremely clinical
The turning point in our season was going 4-4-2 instead of 4-5-1. Johnson wouldn't drop scowen, hourihane or pearson at the time and left winnall up tops on his own this is when we had our long run of defeats. Then one of the 3 midfielders got banned/injured so Johnson was forced to go 4-4-2 and we started to win this is why I never rated him it wasn't tactical it was a forced changed it was clear to see we needed 2 up tops. We need to figure the middle of the park out so we can go 2 up tops otherwise it could be a long season i think. It's a case of best form of defence is attack yes we will be more open but we'll score more. We look less of a threat with 1 up top and are still conceding.
Agreed, then in came Hammill, Aidy White and AN other( memory issues) as we were still struggling a bit on 442 and we were flying after that. Although we defend as a team we have to have confidence in the defence dealing with threats if not then they need replacing or developing further.
Detest that 4-5-1 formation. Felt sorry for Bradshaw yesterday - run his nuts off , won some good headers but no one to feed off him. 4-4-2 every day of the week, would rather lose having a go at teams
At this moment in time we do not have the personel to play 4 4 2.....they need time and experience (and our patience!).....our previous team (last year) was 2 going on 3 years in the making...before the fire sale. Its a leagacy of having 20 youngsters with hardly any experience at this level and expecting the same results as before.
We wouldn't have lost yesterday with two up top but would have with four at back. It's finding the balance between the two.
3 at the back seems most logical solution. Good physical presence in the middle from 3 CBs. Holding midfielder releasing the other 2 mid fielders. 2 up top. Wide presence from attacking wingers / wing backs. Second half yesterday at least showed that Hecky was open to it
