You would have thought that Geoffrey would have had the nous not to make a silly comment
like that especially when he didn't know exactly who was in his audience.

I've been lucky enough to be at a number of " Sporting dinners" down the years and listened
to people who I previously respected making totally unacceptable comments about people who weren't
    there to defend themselves .

I suppose back then such behaviour would probably have been
deemed "acceptable" but cheap jokes about people's beliefs, colour of their skin or sexuality have
    never sat well with me.

Rather than Silly - Id go for bigot but thats just because I don't like him much. No doubt he was a talented cricketer but he would be a long way down the list of cricketers or even Yorkshire celebrities I actually want to meet

Which of those 2 comments are incorrect?

Although there is no real excuse for that kind of comment in todays world, I think you have to take into account his age.It was probably something he remembered fro years ago and said it without thinking.
Yes its easy to criticise but I think back to some of the things that were commonplace expressions as recently as the seventies and think did we really say that?

Cue re-runs of Love your Neighbour - I remember some fairly racist stuff from the 70's but most people from that era have moved with the times. I do remember my Mum complaining when the colour N*gger Brown was renamed but a few years later she wouldnt have dreamed of using the word

What's with our local celebrities causing a bit of controversy the last few days? What next Parky smoking a spliff? Dennis Priestley exposing himself in public? Darren Gough being, errrr... Darren Gough?

    A stupid remark.
I like it when Geoffry talks about cricket, when he's commentating and passing judgement on the game.
I'm not so fond when he's not talking about cricket.
Indeed i think he struggles when it's not cricket.

I dont' like Boycott - not least because he's a plastic manc.

However his comment may be fair if clumsily worded. The BBC as usual don't contextualise or give the question he was asked which he responded to.

How many cricketers from the West Indies have been knighted and received honours

Sir Isaac Vivian Alexander Richards, KNH, OBE - i kind of understand.
Sir Garfield St Aubrun Sobers - maybe

But Sir Curtly Elconn Lynwall Ambrose, KCN - i mean ffs - How many more.

Especially when you think no knighthood for Boycott, Willis, Gooch, Gatting, Gower, Atherton, etc.

Only Botham I think has had a knighthood.

HIs perception may be wrong. But if he feels the honours system is racist against white cricketers he may have a point. He's just fecked up his answer.

The older generation find it hard to be pc in today's over sensitive world. I'm forever saying "you can't say that". They are usually good at remembering who they support though.

Didn't willis, gooch and gatting go on the rebel tour to south africa
Boycott and Gooch went on the rebel tour to south africa in 82: Gatting in 89.
Think this could be a significant factor.

That and the fact that Boycott withdrew from playing for England when they didnt make him captain for several years in the mid 70's and the fact he has always played for G Boycott, never really as a team player.

In 2014 in putting him forward for a knighthood Theresa May said " I have been a Geoff Boycott fan all of my life."
Apparently the nomination was blocked on the grounds of a criminal conviction for the alleged assault of a former lover, which Geoffrey strenuously denied.

I'm no cricket fan, but I did go to one 20/20 game, quite a few years ago. It ended up being rained off all day, so not certain if it was a 1 dayer or 20/20. Anyway, we were in the suite or whatever it is, and in comes Captain Boycott in his big daft cap, dressed fully in cream/yellow, with his guest Theresa May. I'd never heard of her at this point. Little did I realise I was a few metres away from our future PM.

    Cool story bro :D

One cannot argue with that statement...
However england and yorkshire would have lost many games without his single minded and narrow determination.
