Ive never understood why people even have one pint when they are driving.... What's the point? It's expensive compared to a hot drink or a soft drink and isn't very refreshing. If your not driving and fancy a few and getting a bit merry I'm all for it but just 1 for the sake of it I don't get....

Last time he went out he lent his mate a Sheff Utd tie. Should have seen the stir that caused.

Having joked previously on the said post, i would honestly be all in favor of the law stating a zero policy on drinking and driving ...it would clear up any confusion...simple ....you drink alcohol youre not allowed to drive....automatic 5 year ban if caught under the influence followed by having to sit another driving test...sounds harsh but its small fry when you realize the effect drink driving has on someones life who is effect by these irresponsible idiots who choose to drink and drive

Maybe not everyone drinks to get merry? I have a pint before the match because I enjoy the taste of beer and meet people in a pub. Every other home match it's my turn to drive.

Well said Durks. I was thinking something similar - Just how many people walk down the stairs backwards because they find them too steep?

Russia has a zero drink drive limit. It means no lunchtime pints if you'r diving in the evening, and taking taxis the morning after even after a light session just in case. It might sound draconian but I think it's absolutely correct. I never have even half a pint when I'm driving as the habit of not touching anything on the day I'm behind the wheel is so ingrained. Uber gets a lot of business out of me on a weekend!

I'm a solid bloke, 5ft 10 and not particularly waif-like. I'm pretty sure that two pints of regular strength beer, especially with food, would not put me over the limit. HOWEVER, even one pint would noticeably slow my reaction times, and more importantly, would make me feel far less alert and more drowsy than if I hadn't had a drink. Is that really how I want to feel driving home from a night match to Lincolnshire where my folks live, or four hours back from an away match? Just because somebody is under the limit, it doesn't mean that the alcohol hasn't reduced their ability to drive. Especially if it leads to someone falling asleep at the wheel, which is no less catastrophic than wanton speeding.

I like to drink before the game so I never drive. It's not hard to do. Anyone drinking and driving are both stupid and dangerous.

I was at a hen do in York last month and as you can imagine a lot of drink was being drunk. On the last night I limited myself to 3 drinks and stopped drinking completely by 10pm as I knew I'd have to leave the place we were stopping by 10am. (Our society being what it is, I then had to pretend to be drinking to avoid aggro - buying mocktails, asking the barman to put soft drinks in glasses that they use for vodka and coke etc.) However, everyone else kept drinking heavily until we got in at 5am. There is no way on Earth that they weren't over the limit. To make it even worse, one lass, who had been the one sinking the drinks the most, then started drinking 'bucks fizz' (glass of prosecco, with about a teaspoon of orange juice) and said 'look at me, acting as if I haven't got to drive in an hour'. Despite the fact that I reckon everyone there was still over the limit from the night before, most people told her it was unacceptable and, after she tried to laugh it off for a minute, we got through to her and she huffily drank a cup of tea instead.

Drink driving on a monday morning after 3 days solid binging at butlins music festivals.
The police would have a field day.

In my first job, my manager was ex-air force, and most days had 3-4 pints in the bar at lunchtime and kept a bottle of whiskey in his desk drawer. Another couple of the managers there were also ex-forces (logistics/admin rather than fighting people) and did similar. All of them drove home every day... I suppose that was normal at the time.

BTW it is not possible to have a 0 blood alcohol level for a ban because some medical conditions can cause people to metabolise low levels of alcohol into the bloodstream. They are perfectly safe to drive, etc, but they would fail this test for something they have no control over. They should have the limit at around the equivalent of 1 unit though.

A few years ago when we went on that bad run under Lee Johnson you needed a stiff drink before you set off to Oakwell!!

Russia allows a nominal amount to allow for these conditions, and people carry certification to prove they have it. The limit is still set at under half a pint of beer, so effectively zero.

I never have a drink if I know i'm going to be driving. It's just so easy to do.

I vaguely recall some study a good while back that showed the first part of drinking alcohol actually acts as a stimulant and increases responsiveness. But it was a small amount (much less than a pint).

Exactly. Over the years I've met up with a few mates and we've gone to real ale pubs, had a nice bar meal and a single pint pre match.

How many would use their mobile phone whilst driving to and from a home game. statistically causes more fatalities whilst driving than alcohol now,

A very good point and something i admit i have done in the past pre smart phone?you still see people with the phone to a ear now but what amazes me is how many you see with the phone in hand up by the steering wheel reading something.

The amount of people u can see coming towards you or from behind (in their rear view) constantly looking down at their mobile is horrendous.

I saw a taxi pull out yesterday with his mobile in one hand and steering wheel in the other, not indicating and looking at his mobile. It's not as if he had to pull out. He could have remained parked up while he dealt with the phone. I always put my mobile on silent - if I remember - and never answer while driving if I don't.
