To hear some positive comments from a rival supporter which makes a change.
Most Sunderland fans I know ( brother-in-law included) have a soft spot for Barnsley.

The guys obviously done his research regarding famous people who were born and bred
in the Town. When she was in her early teens my Sister was a promising hurdler and sprinter.
The records she set at the now defunct Thorne Grammar School still stood until it converted into
an Academy. She was a member of the famous Doncaster Plant Works Athletic Club and represented the
Club in the three A's Championships at the British Timpkin Ground in Northampton.

Always remember that she told me that a very modest athlete from Barnsley gave her some very valuable
advice on her technique before her race, which she put into practice to come second to an athlete from Halifax in the 100 metres.

After the event her mentor approached her and encouraged her to stick at it , as from what she has seen out
on the track that afternoon, she said my Sis could probably reach Olympic standard which was flattering praise indeed.

Unfortunately because of the training she had to do, she developed muscles in her calves which she thought to be "unsightly" , discovered boys and completely packed running in. A couple of years later the shy unassuming Barnsley lass who had given her the advice at the AAA meeting came to national prominence.
She was the one and only legendary Dorothy Hyman.

    That's a rather nice piece!

I think the atmosphere Saturday will be grand. They're bringing plenty of support. Might be a bit busy in town for a pre-match pint, but I don't think it'll be crawling with police like when we play Leeds or Sheffield.

I hope they don't prove me wrong, but I've always found the Mackems to be very civilised fans.
Apart from Newcastle, they seem to get on well with rival Clubs supporters.

Great ambassador. She must be in her mid-70's now.? Is the Dorothy Hyman Stadium still owned by Premier Leisure who also manage the Metrodome.? It never fails to amaze me how sport in general has evolved over the years and how well
todays athletes themselves are known and how much they are paid.

When I was at College , to earn some brass in the Summer I got a job as a van lad delivering groceries at the Co-op in Doncaster. I got to be big mates with the driver who drove the wagon whilst I ran up and down the streets delivering boxes of groceries to the folks in Edenthorpe Doncaster. Found out that he was Jim Fernie, who played inside forward for Donny Rovers and later on in his career played for Montrose and Forfar Athletic.

After I left my first ever job in London as a Clerical Officer in the Civil Service around ' 64 I was posted to Leeds and worked at the Telephone Managers Office. I used to arrive in the morning at the same time as a very pleasant lass
with curly hair. She always arrived on a racing bike and always greeted everybody with a smile and an " ey up luv" whenever she saw you. It didn't mean much to me at that time but when I re-located back to Donny and she made a name in cycling eventually winning 7 World titles, I came to realise that the lass in question was the legendary Beryl Burton.!

How many of the so called modern day "Stars" would have to graft like those of yesteryear, just to earn enough brass to pursue a "professional" career.? Some of them don't know they're born.!

Lovely story about Beryl Burton. Dorothy worked at the NCB HQ at Grimethorpe and lives at Stairfoot, across the road from the Aldi store heading towards Worsborough.

Met Dorothy Hyman in my working days. A lovely and unassuming lady. A credit to this town. Nice to think her name is engraved on the 'Sports Personality Of The Year' trophy along with Bobby Moore, Princess Anne, Becks, AP and Andy Murray.
