I think with horseracing the problem of hazardous sport is not the rider...free will and all that...but the fact that with particularly National hunt, horses have no freedom of choice. Many die over the years particularly in the National for example.
It takes a lot of kids off the street, teaches them some discipline and gives them a way to channel any anger, so it aint all bad it gives em goals to aim for better that than hanging round street corners gerrin up to mischief. On the other end of the scale it is over hyped to buggery and a lot of boxing that I remember from memory (dunt watch much narrdays) was a lot of mismatched feights where they should have put the promoter in to the ring to take a pounding. Headguards for the amateurs was a good thing they introduced.
Good news! DusThaNoIII semes to have fixed his incomprehensible posting problems of the past couple of days The bad news is he is posting OOT irrelevant examples of excessive freedom of choice. Cannibalism, the last time I looked, is illegal regardless of whether it is between two consenting adults only partly because If one person killed and ate another it would be a bit difficult to ask the victim if he had consented
[QUOTE="MrsHallsToffeerolls, post: 2010965, member: 7033" Headguards for the amateurs was a good thing they introduced.[/QUOTE] My earlier post referred to some medical research (no idea if it was discredited) a few years ago that stated all headblows were damaging but even more so when headguards are worn as it enables longer prolonged sustained periods of blows to the head before a fighter becomes disorientated or unconscious increasing the risk of bruising and swelling of the brain. The conclusion was that Pro boxing and even bare knuckle fighting is 'relatively' less damaging long term than amateur boxing using headguards. Like I said not sure how the conclusions were viewed by the medical world in general (as they are more concerned with getting an outright ban). Like I say I am not a doctor but the argument seems to make sense, after all headgear does not prevent knockouts.
Interesting Think I may have read summat similar missen. Like owt else though one minute its good fer yer next minute they`re telling you its bad.
How narrow minded. We are all dieing slowly, about time people respected other people's autonomy. Also banning things doesn't work and just leads to same behaviours but with more risks, ala illicit drugs market. You think if you banned boxing as you propose it'd stop people organising fights or just have less controlled fights with more risks to those involved?
"What are you ta(l)king about" How apt... not the only one saying that given one or two of your recent posts. For example... on the game on the league team and it yuu I You the queen uand of course she is my queen. Don't you think I'm gonna one ☝️ or nah mate that's not what you wanted me to do. Tomorrow is going to go back and without the good luck to the Sunderland team and we have to win a championship game tomorrow night for the league winning trophy???? DusThaNoIII, Saturday at 8:18 PMReport #2LikeReply MarioKempes and Mr C like this. Dragon TykeWell-Known Member WTF was all that then..... can anyone help out with this... is his nurse , carer or therapist online... or can someone go round to his house with straight jacket... he has totally lost it. ******************** That is one example of what I was talking about. Care to translate? PS based on the above, it wasn't a 'swipe' just a light hearted dig at one or two of the previous posts you made. Whether it was after a good night on the ale, a technical glitch or whatever, the result was the same a couple of undecipherable posts. Nothing malicious intended although I still think the cannibalism example wasn't a good one.
If consenting adults want to become fabulously rich as a result of punching each other in the face, that's up to them. Do what you like. I don't want to hear the families wailing if someone ends up with an IQ of about 40, though. If you understand the risks, do whatever pleases you. Equally, I have zero interest in watching Bloke A punch Bloke B. Whatever money they earn, I have contributed zero. Now meat-eating, on the other hand...
No, the aim is to win. Knockouts are useful for building hype & making yourself a name but many of the recent greats have been fighters who rarely look for the knockout & win on points. Mayweather, Hopkins & Calzaghe for example
This is exactly the reason why it shouldn't be banned... As things stand now, the sport is fairly well regulated and does a good job at protecting thee fighters welfare(as much as you can protect the welfare of two blokes hitting each other). For example, most places require the fighters to have excellent levels of fitness and show no signs of illness or brain injury as well as minimum weight for the gloves etc... The minute you banned the sport, the organised criminal gangs would simply take it underground, and I can't see them being too concerned with the fighters welfare... n.b. I know there will be many illegal, underground(and likely bare knuckle) fights organised at the minute too, but the number would shoot up if the sport were to be banned.
I wouldn't ban boxing but I can't really see any argument against introducing mandatory head protection like in amateur boxing
Do they still have the head protection in the amateur ranks? In the last Olympics, the men didn't wear them(the women did though...)
Ian Hume got a fractured skull, let's ban Football. Didn't a guy die from getting hit with a cricket ball? Ban it. Let's also ban American Football. Let's ban Rugby and Hockey. Don't even get me started on UFC, wrestling or any kind of martial arts.
I've just read that apparently it was removed in the Olympics because head protection actually increases concussions rather than decreases them for a variety of reasons. It makes the head a bigger target so there are more shots to the head than without it, it makes boxers feel safer getting hit so they take more risks defensively and also because it encourages the offensive boxer to hit on the unprotected chin which actually causes more concussions due to how your head moves when hit.
Men's Olympic boxers don't use head guards now as far as I know stopped a few years ago. I think even the elite amuters don't use them anymore. Can we ban horse racing horses aren't made to be sat on, pointless sport and encourages gambling.
It's a completely understandable decision for me. I suppose the illusion of safety they bring can lead to complacency....
I hate boxing and you'd have to pay me to watch it. I don't even know who won a boxing match last night which seemed to get a lot of people excited. However, I would like to see boxing, well not boxing, rather all-in fighting - at half time at Oakwell between the mentally retarded idiots who usually fight in and outside football grounds representing the two sides - it would beat the kiddies penalty shoot-out against Toby Tyke into a cocked hat. We could have a ring set up in the centre circle and let them get on with it.
what about the 1000s of kids from tough areas, who turn to boxing instead of turning to a life of crime? like it or loathe it, boxing has been literally a lifesaver. it's certainly saved far more lives than it's ruined. i go with the original response. just don't watch it.
