I am a big cycling fan so I am biased, but I find it absolutely impossible to believe that any living person in Europe of sound mind and body has not at least heard of the Tour de France. It's impossible. It's like saying you've never heard of the FA Cup or The Ashes.

I didn't say I've never heard the words "Toure De France" I just had no idea what it was.. and actually still don't. Again, I'm going to assume it's like the cycling world cup.

But how can you not know what it is? It came through this very county and you couldn't avoid it. It was impossible to ignore its presence. Or its legacy.

I have no interest in baseball but I still know a little bit about the World Series even though I don't live in America and have never taken an interest in it in my life. Some things are unavoidable.

Change Europe to world. Its the biggest annual sporting event in terms of spectators globally. Well into the millions over the course of 3 weeks.

Le Tour De France is a 3 week trek around France (and occasional visits elsewhere) that is the most prestigious event in cycling. It is one of 3 "Grand Tours" - The Giro D'Italia and Vuelta Espana are the other two. Chris Froome has already won the Tour this year and is currently in the lead in the Vuelta. All 3 grand tours involve riding roughly 2,000 km around a variety of stages with many of the big ones involving the kind of mountains normal people struggle to drive up. Each Grand Tour has several jerseys to win, including overall, points (points are awarded for finishing place so usually goes to a sprinter), mountain, young rider and usually a team category.

Cycling has its own World Championships - usually in September/October where individuals and teams compete in a one-off event (road race or time trial).

Track cycling also has its own World Championships (as does BMX and mountain biking) and all are also in the Olympics.

True but I could imagine some people in Inner Mongolia having not heard of it but it's ingrained in European culture so impossible to avoid.

It did? Okay, I'm not trying to bullsh** or anything but I've never seen it or heard anything about it other than it's name. I don't really watch much TV or have any friends interested in it so.

Sorry. I'm worried about getting too personal on a public forum.

If you have were living as a Mormon and not in Yorkshire before 2014 I can possibly understand you not being aware of the TdF.

If it helps, I'd never heard of Anthony Joshua until I read this thread. I also don't watch England football matches and have no interest in them. The only way you'd get me to watch a Premier League football match is if Barnsley were playing in one. If England were playing Germany in my front garden, I'd close the curtains.

Was here before then Conan, back and forth, just really I've never paid enough attention. What Scoff said was very informing.
