has been involved in some way with the club for longer than we thought. Has our recent transfer policy been down to him possibly. Patrick alluded to a reason for our recent success and the way we do things that he was going to explain it when the time was right.Just a thought, could explain a few things..
We might have copied his model to a degree. Be surprised if he had anything to do with us in the past though.
Build it and they will come. Well that's what's happening Saturday , they're all coming yayyy. Hignett, Dyer, Les lea, Eric, Sir Bobby. Can't wait. COYR
Well I'm summising he is as someone was pm ing YT his phone number , walked home from matches a few times alongside Les and his mates. I'm sure he once told me he had played alongside or against Sir Stanley Mathews but could be wrong my memory isn't/ wasn't very good at best of times. I can't remember playing spurs in 1986 against Osvaldo et Al and I must have been there but try as I might I can't reach the memory card in the back of my mind lol.
Seems that Mr Beane's Moneyball concept is well known within the game and is well practiced by some Clubs. No doubt someone within our set up has read about it and adopted it to some degree. It will be interesting to see whether the concepts original founder can tweak it to our future advantage.! http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/spor...afa-benitez-gives-thoughts-moneyball-13627060
Ah, right. He played alongside Sir Stanley at Blackpool when Les was starting off his playing career. We lost the Second Round First Leg 3-2 against Spurs in the League Cup (Stuart Gray scored both our goals) and were beaten 5-3 away at White Hart Lane in the Second Leg. Ardiles was booed all the time in the home leg, presumably because he was Argentinian.
Money all works when there is an 'even playing field' so sports where there is a wage cap and everyone has the same spending power. The theory is that you get players who are less well paid but statistically punch above their weight. When clubs can just spend big, the advantage the moneyball approach gives is removed. Moneyball might make us Championship level competitive but we'd not compete in the prem. When I get time I'll dig out articles to support this.
I honestly have no recollection of this match at all and I would imagine it should have been clear as day in my mind. Maybe it's the awful shock of conceding five lol
My memory's rubbish these days, old mate. I can't remember who scored our three goals in the 2nd Leg, but believe one was Larry May.
Hope not mate and that's no disrespect to you but I would love to see Les strolling on the hallowed turf to a round of applause.
Hopefully, he gets the opportunity to receive the applause from some of us older supporters who appreciated his skills in a Barnsley shirt.
