They started singing it to show their support for him I'd imagine so you'd think they'd be happy to stop if he has publically said he doesn't want them to sing it. Lots of people say that people shouldn't get offended on others' behalf as they can say themselves if they are offended. Well, he has, so they should stop.

 

The people making the biggest fuss out of all this are white people.

Being offended on someone else's behalf.

I very much doubt outside of towing the party line Lukaku actually gives a **** or is even remotely offended.

 

Why? He's openly said he wants them to stop so to take the opinion that he's not bothered, based on nowt other than your own speculation, is a bit strange.

 

If he was that bothered he'd have said something after the West Ham game, the pre season friendlies, the games before the 'suits' got upset.. Not when they got upset which in turn has caused the ruckus that's currently happening.

That said even though I think he was told to make a statement now he has it would be best if it stopped.

 

To be fair, I've just looked into the story a bit more and it does seem that way. If the song was derogatory then fair enough but it seems a strange battle for Kick it Out to pick. The song seems harmless enough, or at least on a par to other stereotypical songs, but then the fans switched to a cleaner version afterwards so there's no reason they can't just stick to that.

 

It's a daft chant, which plays on a dubious stereotype in a totally non-offensive way. But in modern PC-Britain, any tenuous link to anything remotely racial is jumped upon and sensationalised. I doubt Romelu Lukaku gives a toss about it, he probably wasn't even really aware until the usual suspects started moaning. He has asked fans to stop singing it, as probably instructed, and as such it would be wise for United fans to stop singing the song. But my God, talk of banning orders and police action, charges being brought with possible knock on effects... what a joke. I do wish this much interest was put into more serious crimes, but I suppose that wouldn't fit the agenda.

As an aside, there are literally hundreds of football chnats that contain either literal or implied meanings that would fall foul of a politically correct censorship. I wonder how far we may go down the line of censoring and approving songs. Why can we sing songs about players who have ginger hair? Why can we sing about fans 'surrendering or you'll die'? How far will the authorities go with sanitising the game? Food for though.

The more I think about it though, is there really any need for songs that fall foul of it? Why can't fans just sing songs that praise the player or the club without resorting to stereotypes? Maybe that's why football fans are looked down upon, because they still think it is acceptable to chant in such a way. Perhaps the fans of now will look back in 10 or 20 years and be embarrassed at what they used to think was not only accepted but expected. I'm just throwing that out there as a discussion point, I haven't really made up my mind either way as I enjoy 'banter' as much as the next person but it is a bit childish really.

It's the humour aspect that has always been injected into football fans chants isn't it. Although the more violent aspects of tribalism on football terraces has gone, there still lingers real tension and tribalism in the songs and I think this is what still gives football the edgey atmophere when compared to other sports. Part of being a football fan, or at least a large part of the terrace culture, has always been to wind the opposing fans up as well as support your side. Hence the plethora of songs aimed at other clubs and opposing players. The literal meaning of most of these chants are never meant to be carried out or even truly believed, but it's a way of point scoring, verbally, and getting a reaction.

On a personal note, I love it and always have done. I would never actually resort to violence and haven't got any particular ill feeling to any opposing fans, but that edge to the atmosphere has always got me hooked. I simply wouldn't want to pay the ticket prices to sing purely positive, in no way cheeky, bland inane songs. But that it just me.

The thing is, football has moved on from being a purely working class male sport. But a lot of football crowds are still far removed from the reality of modern life. Things get sung and said at a match that would never really happen in other areas of life. It's a sub-culture. Nowadays, football has boomed, opening itself up to an ever increasing exposure. With that comes sponsors, TV companies, loads of investors who aren't really football people. They probably haven't got the first idea what a football crowd actually sing about. When however, certain songs are highlighted in the public domain, people with a vested interest in the game absolutely do not want their investment tarnished by some oik singing a funny song about a player's penis. They do not want some cockney refering to Tottenham by a word that has been sung for 30 years but potentially considered offensive. So there is a move to eradicate it. I think we'll see this increase.

You have a great point, it seems strange that we have to accept often offensive songs as part of supporting our team. But that kind of thing is instrinsically linked to football fandom and the ever diluting terrace culture. I personally don't want to see increased censorship. Overtly offensive songs should be banned yes, but I'm not sure it's practical or even desireable to start purging humour and reasonable 'edge' to football atmospheres.

 

In my day I could meet up with all my best friends and have a wonderful sing song at the top of my lungs about men's hard huge lovely personks with a smile on my face. PC brigade take everything away from me.
