As I understand it he doesn’t get to ‘look’ for players in the traditional sense. He gets them recommended to him and either accepts or doesn’t. If none of those recommendations are for a Scowen type player then he can’t conjure one up. The plan did not value the Scowen type player or he would still be with us. Maybe he think over time he can adjust the playing style of those recommended to him and he thought that was the least worst option to have players who he saw talent in rather than no one.
I hold my hand up and say that I was wrong to insist on 442....we looked absolutely garbage in the second half!!!! Why did he change it when we was winning????
This exactly. We have to compensate for powder puff no 10s who won't put a foot in. This is where we were before Hourihane learnt how to make a tackle. 4-4-2 is brilliant if you have 2 decent hardworkers in the centre, with speed or guile on the wing. Ugbo looked totally lost when we went to 4-4-2, and was put to shame by Bradshaw's work rate.
This is what I'm confused about. Why did we mess about with a formation we looked comfortable with in the first half. Can understand if we are down a goal and need to chuck a striker on but didn't make sense today.
You can only play systems with the players you have....i wonder if the 442 shouters saw spain rip italy a "new one" playing 4...6..0 the other week.
It isn't about scoring points against people who advocate 442. Because no matter what formation we play we look pretty week.
In previous games when our 4-5-1 formation hasn't been working I admit I've been wanting him to switch things up and go 4-4-2 but when your winning then why change.....am really really baffled....within minutes i turned to my dad and said that we look like a team who look lost....after 15 minutes it was wave after wave of the ball just coming back at us with us losing the midfield battle
We do.... and until this bunch of plsyers can mature to doing that we have to be very patient.....for all the reasons given before. This team is brand new and needs time to develop....it may be painful on the way (it may not) but this was always going to be a massive ask for the coach and players this season. Imho...i think we are ahead of where i thought wed be...regarding both points on the board and some of our play
It's obvious that a replacement for Hourihane is being sought with them. So far we've brought 6 players in to replace the one.
I think tonight should be a big learning curve for this team and hecky. We have outplayed a lot of teams with the 4141 formation and should stick to it but with some changes. Davies needs a break and townsend is more than capable, Gus back instead of Jackson and get Yiadom back in, rotate williams Gardner mcgheehan Moncur and Potts to find the best 3 together but add mallan in aswell. Bradshaw and ugbo not good enough so give Thiam a run and brown a chance when fit but a striker in Jan is without doubt the most important and obvious thing we need. Hammill should be the first name on the sheet and play right side with Mccarthy and we are desperate for izzy back to challenge Barnes as hedges sorry to say not good enough yet. 442 is now ditched until players improve or change. If we do some of the above then we will avoid relegation.
So when the recruitment works the manager takes the praise. When it doesn't Patrick takes the blame seems fair.
Hardly the case is it? The head coach took the praise when he turned around results and when he improved the said players to the point where they could be flogged. He's now getting *some* criticism for team selection and tactics. We've given ourselves a massive massive task this season, hence there will be a search for answers.

I remember abit back I questioned how much credit we can give Wilson and lee Jay for signing the players who eventually got us promoted. I was hammered on here by folk saying you have to give Wilson the credit he has the final say in any incoming players. Some even suggested because of this Wilson played a big part In us getting promoted as he signed Conor and Sam winnall. Now when the recruitment goes pear shaped it's the spreadsheets fault hmmm. We signed a defender for 500k who can't get a kick a striker for 900k and a midfielder for 850k all on the bench 2million pound of talent on the bench. Our past 3 transfer Windows under hecky have been not too good.
