    My first season watching Barnsley from the terraces on the West Stand. Archdeacon, Futch, Banks, Cooper - some class players.

    I don't recall him ever behaving like that for Barnsley. In fact, other than a lack of pace, he was a very effective player for us.
    However, there's been a couple of posters on here who met him and described the bloke as thoroughly unpleasant.

    He did, night game, we lost 2-1. Steve Cooper went in the net and had a decent game there. The sound of Wardle's leg going was awful.

    Thankfully I never had the dubious pleasure of meeting with the man but I can understand how those couple of posters would have come by this opinion of him.

    No, Ian. The poster is talking about our young reserve goalie at the time Ian Wardle. It was he who had his leg broken by Robbie Earle and it ended the boy's career.

    It was a horrible, challenge, too, and if I remember correctly, Earle didn't even get booked. Our striker Steve Cooper went in goal and that lad was as hard as nails.

    That's right JLWBigLil. As commented previously I was on the Ponte Road end with my lad ( then aged 13) when
    it happened right in front of us. My son was quite upset at witnessing it, but it didn't stop him eventually playing in goal
    for local teams later on. Earle quite deliberately lunged at Wardle and his leg snapped like a stick poor kid.
    It didn't surprise me when Earle went on to play for Wimbledon. If I remember he later became a pundit on ITV but lost his job
    over passing on some free World Cup tickets to a friend who then sold them on for a sizeable profit.
    Came over as an amiable sort but on the field a nasty piece of work that gave as good as he got.

    Why do I think this happened away at Port Vale not at home.
