After watching a few Championship games on the tele, especially the Wendy v Leeds match, and now England - the tippy tappy Barcelona style possession football is just so dull dull to watch - and more importantly it's becoming increasingly ineffective and out of date. The unusual quick cavalry charge style implemented by Hecky is far more effective and exciting.
I always disagreed with this point of view, until I watched us play Huddersfield last season, would rather watch paint dry then watch that drilled machine, grind out tippy tappy pressure ball.
The main point being - is it possible to coach a team that very rarely touches the ball - but importantly is able to maintain concentration to the extent that when they do get the ball they are able to quickly move forward and have a strike on target? If you listen to some of the old Hecky interviews he talks about his players not having the ability to knock the ball about like other players from other clubs. And he was talking about this during the Hourihane/Scowen period. There's not just been a revolution at Barnsley relating to the appointment of players using statistics......... in comparison to other teams there has also been a revolution in the way Barnsley approaches football. Unusually - this approach relies on flooding the midfield with a specific type of player - fast big powerful midfielders. Example - Potts and McGeehan. There's definitely been a lot of thought and brain power happening at Barnsley during the last couple of years.
