Southgate might not have the very best squad to choose from but who in their right mind plays a flat back four AND two defensive holding midfielders - against the sides we have been playing? He’s a clown. He’s got Europe’s most in form centre forward, one of the few that can ruin a defence on either foot and in the air. He also has two of the best attacking full backs - albeit Danny rose is injured at the mo, Bertrand is hardly Phil Neville at left back though. Yet he plays narrow insipid tippy tappy football. Anyone with half a brain cell or even just a pair of eyes could see we need true width, and that Kane needs better support in the box. He even takes a decent wide player in Sterling (not saying he’s a worldy but he’s doing ok at the country’s best club on current form), and ruins him by trying to make him play like David Silva. We haven’t got a number 10. Play to what we have you pillock. Like the squad of players Barnsley has dictates that we need to play the 4-5-1/4-3-3 that we are, it is clear that England need to play three at the back with quick wing backs, and have a midfield three higher up the field plus support up front for Kane. It took Southgate 86 minutes to realise that last night, and about five minutes for it to create a clear chance. Which Kane took. Like he always will. Gareth Southgate is obviously a nice fella. Well spoken. He did ok with the u21s. But so did Stuart Pearce and Peter Taylor. You wouldn’t have them in charge. (I’d have Pearce over Southgate to be fair). Look at his managerial credentials. Took a team that the wally with the Brolly won a trophy and got to a European final with - and relegated it, then got the sack in the championship early the next season. That is it. Followed by becoming a corporate yes man for the fa? Well done fella. The players aren’t all that great and they are afraid to perform. They need a good quality coach in charge. Not necessarily the worlds best, but at least somebody with half a fecking clue. Ancellotti would take a part time job until July. It would cost next to nothing to get Benitez out of Newcastle. Both know the English game and both, particularly Benitez, can organise a side and maximise its potential. Newcastle have some very average players but have looked decent this year. If they insist on an Englishman, get somebody with some actual managerial experience. Get Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe. Christ I’d even take Alan Pardew over this dross. Paul Clement has worked with a lot of the worlds best clubs and is now doing well as a manager. Left field but what about someone like Chris Wilder? Cracking job he’s doing. Gary Monk has had a quiet start at boro but was good at Swansea and Leeds. Christ give it to Hecky, he’s achieved more as a manager than Southgate. To be fair anyone. I liked Southgate as a player, he’s clearly a really nice bloke, but ask yourself, which premier league or even championship club would want him? Say Hecky left, would you want him here? Thought not...
I know Shearer had a poor time in charge at Newcastle, but they were already a team in decline and was a near impossible job. I'd have him in all honesty. I'm sure he'd get the respect of the players.
There's no 'top' english players playing abroad because they get paid much more here ( notwithstanding the fact they are not good enough to get into the top teams in europe) Most of these players do play european football on a regular basis too, be it in the champions or europa league so they have plenty of european experience. Just not good enough at player and managerial level.
Kane, Ali, Walker, Cahill and Stones (this season's version) are good enough to be in a world cup winning team. The rest are very meh.
In reality - probably Kane and this years version of Stones could make it in Germany or Spain, the rest, naaah.
