Ted Heath 'Would Be Formally Questioned' If Same Allegations Came Out Today

When you write 'Dirty Tories' at the head of your post, it rather implies that you have already decided that the allegations against the late Sir Edward Heath are proven. In reality, they are not and they never will be - one way or the other. We live in an age where soundbites and sensationalist tabloid headlines appear to direct opinion more than reasoned debate and proper due process. I hope we never get to the stage where people - whatever their political persuasion - are regarded as guilty and convicted of crimes without proper legal consideration. There are many countries in the world where that happens, and they are not pretty examples. Bandying about 'Dirty Tories' is about as simplistic as looking at the Rotherham CSE inquiry and saying 'Dirty Labour'.

At a more considered level, I was asking myself yesterday whether it was right for the police to have conducted this enquiry in respect of a person who can never be the subject of a prosecution. On one hand, police resources are scarce, and there are seemingly many, many crimes which have not been fully investigated - partly as a result of under-resourcing. On the other hand, it's possible that an investigation into these allegations could reveal persons who assisted (if the crimes were committed) who are still living and who could be prosecuted. But I think the Wiltshire Police and Crime commissioner's statement on Operation Conifer covers everything, and satisfies me at least that the investigation was properly entered into.

I'm not a Tory apologist. But I think if you want to see a Tory convicted without due process then some day that could happen to a Labour politician.... or a Lib Dem, etc. Don't we need to just engage brains a little better than that?

Which is why they have been investigated to this point. Of 40 initial allegations, the police have dismissed all but 7 out of hand. There can be no guarantee that those 7 would be proved if it were possible to prosecute them. You're a brave man if you can regard them as proved when you don't know the full story.

I think there are lots of things to criticise the Tories about without resorting to something that may or may not be true.

 

Of course, he's done some wrong or the police would not have spent 2 years investigating there were over a 1000 complaints about him in which the police looked into the worst 7, can't any one grasp it he was Prime Minister had his finger on the blow us all to kingdom come button and this made him open to a multitude of things. I don't care what Political Party he belongs or what walk of life he comes from if he's been messing about with kids it wants bringing to justice be he dead or alive.
