Standing up at matches

What are people's opinions on standing at matches? Both Villa and Middlesbrough have brought 4000+ fans who have stood for 90 minutes and created the best atmospheres this season at oakwell.

When we go away we sit down for 90 minutes and the atmosphere is garbage.

 

I think standing in seated areas is wrong, it spoils the view for many children & people who have problems standing for any length of time, ie; the elderly or for health reasons, plus it raises safety issues, however , safe standing areas are a different thing, kids & smaller people can stand at the front & safety aspects of the area have been addressed & as you say , makes for a better atmosphere

 

I think it's all good as long as the people behind you are cool with it.
If you have difficulty standing up I'd suggest sitting closer to the front, as people tend to stand up as the ball gets closer to the goal or for corners or free kicks etc.

 

I thought Boro fans were quiet as mice despite being stood up until they made it 2-2.

Standing up is alright if everyone does it and is fine with it. If you're stood up in front of someone and they clearly want to sit and neither of you can move, then you're a ****.

 

Standing -selfish and inconsiderate. I am capable of standing but having had a thrombosis (blood clot in my leg a couple of years ago doctors orders are that i am not supposed to stand for long periods (certainly not the length of a football match.) There are many people kids who for various reasons cannot see when the rows in front stand up particularly in some stands where the rake of the tiers is not very steep. It is particularly annoying, if underSTANDable (see what I did there) when people leap to their feet when there is a corner or a fast attack because people who cannot get to their feet miss the very things they came to watch.
Designated standing areas can and should trialled for those who prefer the "atmosphere" generated by standing and let those people who have paid to sit actually sit. 2 hours or so is a long time to stand I remember even as a kid and often used to look longingly at the West Stand where those with money were sitting sheltered from the rain and sleet whilst freezing my nuts off in the Ponty behind the goal often having to move around as my view kept being blocked by a bloke in front.
Besides, whilst not illegal it does breach ground regulations and entitles the club to evict a spectator from the ground for persistent standing. Like I said though, it demonstrates a selfish, inconsiderate attitude on the part of those who insist on standing for 90 minutes-

 

So people who cant stand up get poorer view

 

It's unfortunate, but people will stand up during corners or when we're on the offense. Just seems to be a natural thing that happens.

 

What football needs are those locking safety bars that go over your shoulders on those white knuckle rides in theme parks. (well it IS a roller coaster ride supporting BFC) When you get to your seat they lock down and only release at half & full time or if you press a red emergency button although once pressed you have to spend the rest of the half in the concourse!
Stops people standing up blocking view AND those who annoyingly leave before the final whistle. Win Win!! Gets my vote.. just needs a few million quid to install it

PS Another option is aversion therapy .... Everyone gets a wrist strap that can be triggered by a pressure pad on the seat to give you a sharp non-lethal static electric shock every time you stand up.!

The atmosphere at Wembley last month was great. There was lots of singing in a small crowd. The stewards were up and down and most people were sitting.

 

Certainly not the case at Fulham last season, most were stood and sang that Connor H song for pretty well the whole game, accompanied largely by silence from the home supporters.

I've got my ticket for Burton (I only live 5 miles away) and I'll be standing (not least because they still have standing at Burton).

 

Villa were loud but didn't sell 4000 tickets they were plenty of empty seats. Still not bad for a 5.30 kick off on sky though

 

The seats are there to sit in and anyone constantly standing up spoils it for people who have
mobility problems and who can't see the field of play simple as.

 

Looking forward to burton away for the sole reason you can stand up. Think oakwell would be much better if they converted half of the west stand into standing. This would remove those from east stand/ponte end who stand up + create a atmosphere near the away fans.

 

There should be safe standing at all grounds. Oakwell is a morgue most games. Dull as ditchwater.

 

The problem with say, for example, having safe standing in the Ponty End, and maybe lower west stand, is that it still wouldn't stop people in the east stand jumping up whenever they felt like it. Some might switch to the other areas but plenty would say "No, I like being on the half way line or wherever and I'm not moving" so they would carry on annoying the people behind them game after game

 

Maybe designated areas for over 60s/OAP's etc would be a suggestion..(??)

As for standing up and atmosphere .. they should being back terracing imv

Could be a good idea run along the lines of the family section. The problem would be persuading all the ST holders to change their allocated seats but I think a few small selected blocks around the ground - Ponty, ESL upper (not that many stand in upper from what I have seen) and Lower and West Stand could be given over on a 1st come-1st served basis for those that like to stay seated...err ...NOT based on ageism). It would need to be strictly enforced by the stewards i.e. if you stand up you will be removed and escorted to an 'unrestricted' block.

Any one know if the family section has any problems with persistent 'standups' during the game?

I don't fully understand the connection between standing and volume atmosphere wise. Is everyone struck dumb when seated then?

BFC could run a survey to see if the idea 'has legs' (see what I did there?) and trial it.
