Saw the Mondays twice, just like Stone Roses. In both cases one was a small gig & one was a stadium one.
Both the small gigs were great.
Difference was the Monday's gig (at Birmingham NEC) in 1991? was a massive party, with Donovan as support, Stone Roses in Sheffield Arena in 95 was ****.

 

Saw the Mondays at Manchester GMax with 808 state and MC tunes in support. I think it was a good night. Only gig I ever went on a coach to. Sure there was another band too, but I can't remember who it was.

Looking at a poster, I think I'd have preferred the Wembley gig with Gary Clail and On-U Sound in support - but I always did like Tack>>Head.

 

A bit simplistic but IMO the visceral nature of the Christians vs Muslim really started with the two sieges of Jerusalem as both religions consider it the most important city for their respective religion. The first in 1099 was a massacre of Muslims by the Crusaders followed in 1186 by the conquest of Jerusalem by Saladin. The defeat of Jerusalem signalled the end of the Kingdom of Jerusalem which resulted in Europe launching a 3rd Crusade in 1189 led by Richard the Lionheart, Philip Augustus an Barbarossa separately.

Here is the thing. Growing up in the'50s '60s and '70s I was exposed on TV to Hollywood and the West's portrayal of Richard and the Crusades as heroic, whilst Saladin and his army was always portrayed as a bloodthirsty savage. The last vestiges of the Empire were still evident in filmaking.. particularly B&W adventure films in the 30s and 40s . e.g. The four feathers' is a good example of the perception of Arab nations and even later remakes reinforced the West's perception of the noble Englishman and The barbaric Arab. The same can be said of the Great American Pioneers vs the savage Indian.
David Lean's .Lawrence of Arabia partly reversed that trend but there is one particular scene - (the "no prisoners!" rail ambush) that has echoes of the past western attitude towards the arabs and Turks
Saladin, in fact tried desperately, and fruitlessly to negotiate a peaceful surrender in 1186. He also eventually freed many Arab slaves held by the Christians and allowed survivors to be freed on payment of ransom.

I am not an apologist, what happened in the past, different times and it happened long before I or anyone I know was alive. Certain sections of our society should not keep beating themselves up. Slavery was endemic. even African slaves came from a society where slavery was commonplace. Sadly both slavery and Religious conflict persist and we never learn from past mistakes.

 

don't forget about killing one's own kids, never mind the so called infidels. The original commandments that imaginary tour guide Moses brought down from some hill included the sacrifice of all first born children. classy.

 

The bible does mention selling first born daughters into slavery somewhere too.

 

So if I'm short of cash I could convert to Christianity and sell off my eldest daughter? I'll float that with my wife and let you know how I get on.

Saw the Mondays quite a few times can't remember much about them. No idea why...

Roses were up and down. Went to Spike Island which was awful though I made a liking flogging junior disprins to sad wanna be's. Scarborough back in the day was a different thing they were excellent. Seen the modern version not too impressed.
