I remember Rodney jack scoring at oakwell for Crewe quite a few years back now from 25 30 years a screamer and quite a few in the ponty clapped. Like you say you sometimes just have to appreciate quality
Can remember in the early 90's (it was the year we won the schoolboy FA cup) and we played Newcastle in an evening game, Newcastle scored a very well worked team goal and probably a good 10-15% of the crowd were clapping it.
Roberto Prosinecki, the fantastic Croation, once ran the show, poss late 90s, playing for Portsmouth against us at Oakwell on a Tuesday night. Having pinpointed a couple crosses in off Peter Crouch's head, he got subbed off to a standing ovation from the whole ground. Better still, one of Pompey's staff handed him a lit cig almost as soon as he was off the pitch.
Don't think so, as the only time we played Newcastle under Ardilles at Oakwell as far as I'm aware, we thumped them 3-0. It could easily have been 7 or 8 as well. We were already 3-0 up at half time, and I think we had a very good chance to make it 4 straight after half time, which could well have really opened the floodgates. As it was we declared at three, and Ardilles was sacked shortly afterwards.
Yep, the best individual performance against us I’ve ever seen. To this day. Think he played a ridiculous diagonal ball right onto their full backs foot, who just rifled it first time, was it Jamie Vincent? Rings a bell. But he was just unreal that night. I clapped that goal and got some stick, but loads began clapping around me so they soon shut up. He then put in another dream display against us which I saw at Fratton Park. Amazing player. Couldn’t defend for **** though. Proper luxury. Not sure you can get away with it these days at this level or higher.
Jason Koumas smashed one home from the edge of the area at Oakwell in 2006. One of Simon Davey's first games in charge I believe. Got a bit of an applause from the Ponte.
Remember when some, a minority of Barnsley fans clapped off arsenal when they beat us in premier league..
I think it was a 1-1 draw, penultimate home game of the season in 1990/91 when we missed out on the playoffs. Ardiles was their manager, and they played us off the park in the first half. Their goal was total football, I think involved Steve Watson, Lee Clark and a finish from Gavin Peacock without breaking stride front of the ponty end. Second half was role reversal, we equalised through Mark Smith soon after kick off but couldn't find a winner.
Anyone remember Gordon Strachan get a round of applause at Oakwell in December 1989? We beat Leeds and Strachan did this pass with his heel flicking the ball out to the wing from the centre circle. He got a big round of applause which given it was Leeds underlined the skill involved.
WHY would anyone not applaud strachen given.it was widley know john Dennis was tapping him up to.ge player manager
It was all of the ground that applauded them off as I remember. They were class champions and a respectful oakwell crowd appreciated that.
Arsenal had just been crowned champions & as I remember it , they got a standing ovation from all the Oakwell faithful & went on to beat us 2 v 0
