Northern Ireland 1 nil down thanks to dodgy ref. Never a pen guess ref might have a nice new Swiss bank account and unlimited Toberone.
And failed to give straight red at beginning for nasty table on Dallas who has had to go off as a result of it Very poor ref
Pretty much sums it up - the ref couldnt see and guessed it hit his arm It didtnt - but even if it had it still wasnt a penalty - his arm was kept down and he had no chance to move when a ball is volleyed from about 3 yards away. I wasnt really watching the game but the ref was dreadfull in the bits i did see stopping the game for non existant fouls but only giving a yellow for a tackle on 5 mins that had it been Adam Hammil would have been a red card 10 times out of 10. I really dont understand why video refs cant be allowed in football - In particular for decisions like the "penalty"
One of the worst decisions I've ever seen and in such an important game. Thierry Henry's handball against the Republic and now this, makes you wonder if FIFA hate the Irish. Or perhaps it's just more corruption. Switzerland is a very rich country, Northern Ireland a very poor one in comparison. Makes you wonder. Have to admire the Irish players, management team and fans though, in some parts of the world a decision like that would've caused a riot...
It has to be time to introduce video refs for allowing reviews of key decisions like penalties. Surely the game is so big now that it is becoming untenable to allow months of work to be rendered worthless by individual decisions like that. That must rank as one of the top 5 worst decisions I've ever seen on a football field.
Football is disgraced by decisions like that. The technology to deal with it has been available for years. Rugby and Cricket, slow to change in the past, have shown the way and embraced it. Long past time for change.
Makes a mockery of the whole qualification process. No way the Ref could see a handball. He shouldn't be allowed to officiate at that level again.
And even better he gave Evans a yellow card which means he now has to miss the second leg. You cant appeal a yellow card, only change for mistaken identity so even though the decision is so clearly wrong because the ref is always right there is nothing that can be done about it.
Have to agree. They should be available but they need to sort it out as to how it's applied. I watch the A-League sometimes on BT in the morning and they have it; it just adds controversy and takes minutes to solve. Obviously if they get the right decision great but it needs to be done in a smoother manner otherwise it ends up being such an anticlimax. They don't always get the decision right too. In the Confederations Cup this summer there was a game involving New Zealand and there was a shocker of a tackle followed by a melee. It went to VAR and for me I think there should have been 2 reds and a couple of yellows (the challenge was a certain red) yet somehow they only ended up with a single yellow card! They're using it at the England v Germany game tonight so will be interesting to see what happens!
No i think it was just a piss poor referee. Great Britain and Northern Ireland rank 5th of the world's wealthiest but switzerland are ranked 16th. So no Northern Ireland is not a poor country in comparison to switzerland.
