The Big Game highlights of one of Sniffers last games (first spell) as manager. Quality is not the best. If anybody has this in better quality (or other BFC footage) please get in touch. I’ll be posting more soon.
Full backs attacking, creative midfielders who could also defend, intelligent forwards who brought others into the game. Years ahead of our time.
Thanks for posting that. It brings back so many memories. I'd worked the morning shift at British Steel Stainless in Stocksbridge that day and got there late. The only order we had was for the De Lorean car (start of the Thatcher-created recession). Stood on the Terrace for one of only a handful of times. Great to see Glavin in his pomp. Good team all round though.
Brilliant I’ve got quite a bit from this era some defeats as well. I’ll be putting it all up bit by bit.
To add a couple of things to that. How scared were they of Ronnie Glavin? Every time he got the ball, you had a feeling something was going to happen, and you heard the crowd roar in anticipation. They tried to kick him, but in the time they took to aim a kick he'd disappeared with the ball. Also, any goalkeepers watching, look what happens when you change you mind after deciding to come for a cross. If you come, keep coming, otherwise stay on your line and let your defenders muck things up instead of you.
Can't remember that game for some reason, though I will have been there. Only game against them I can recall from that era is a 2 0 defeat at their place. It was the first away ground I visited. This must have been following season?
Great post KT , I will definitely have been at this game but as with lots of other memories both football and others I can't remember the occasion , Which is a shame as the great Martin peters graced Oakwell and I know I would have been in my elements watching him .
I've just watched it. What a great piece of real football. None of this players falling over when never really touched. And refs stopping play for trivial yellow cards. At times I really hate the football we have to watch.
Unfortunately I can just remember NO subs. Players were men in those days. Hard tackle ....just get up and brush yourself down. Break a leg.....the man with the bucket and sponge will see you alright. Remember Beckenbaur playing with a broken shoulder strapped up in an International. Could you see any player doing that now?
I don't think the hardman thing is a thing of the past, apart from maybe the odd player in the professional game. If you watch any local game there is non of that rolling yourself better, quite the opposite. Players at that level are proud and unless properly crocked, don't readily admit to being hurt. I think if referees weren't as easily conned with diving and rolling about to get players sent off, it wouldn't be as bad.
Big Trev's recall to the side after ripping his shirt off and throwing it at Clarkie in the first game of the season. Seems ridiculous that Glyn Riley got the number nine shirt ahead of Aylott, but that was the kind of disciplined approach that got the manager his early success. Shame he couldn't repeat it. Should have stayed at Oakwell MUCH longer.
