"Kamil Staszalek, 30, said he was there to ‘honour the memory of those who fought for Poland’s freedom’. ‘I’d say some people here do have extreme views, maybe even 30 percent of those marching, but 70 percent are simply walking peacefully, without shouting any fascist slogans,’ he told the AFP.
But many argued the day had been ‘hijacked’ by racist groups, with an ‘anti-fascist’ counter-protest attracting around 2,000 people."

I was in Poland yesterday. I am there often enough and it is a fact that the Poles, and other former Eastern Bloc countries, do NOT like black people. You hardly ever see anything but a white face in towns like Opole (where I was).

I've never quite understood their intolerance, considering what was done to them by the Nazis, and all the way back in history in fact. It's just in their psyche, I suppose, and nothing is going to change that.

I think it's just a case of education and exposure to modern, enlightened ideas. Let's face it they were stuck in a time warp for 50 years under Russian control. Imagine going back 50 years in the UK, there were some pretty backward outlooks around then.

I was there about 9 or 10 years ago(Warsaw, katowice etc) with 2 friends one of whom was a black woman ... im sure the racism there is no different to how it was over here back in the 50s,60s etc ...

Fascism/Far Right has been on rise all over eastern europe since early 90s

What you have all over the "West" Europe, Here the Usa,i s the classic divide and rule, it's all imploding.Just look how many Countries are now split, through Politics, Religion, Race even Ireland with abortion..
. Not all at the same pace.. but no the less.. if it's been orchestrated that way then someone is doing a excellent job behind the scenes

I'm very pro European, but admitting these countries with the same terms as more stable economies was a massive mistake. One that Tony Blair embraced with the other EU leaders at the time. The idea that we are swamped with benefit claimants from the likes of Poland, Hungary, etc is rubbish. We have all their best people & there is a vacuum. The best thing they could do now is accept hard working people from Africa & other poorer places to keep their economy going, not make the same mistakes that lead two two world wars. That is respect for the dead of the Somme, Dunkirk, etc. Flag waving is what got us there. (PS, not saying there are not security concerns with terrorists. In the UK we've cut these so far that we are leaving ourselves open to attack, but our current administration don't give a flying ****).

And have things really improved here?
To me there are still a lot who stand up for Rule Britania, love to think that the British Empire still exists, and England rules the waves. Also some consider those of a darker shade of skin makes then inferior.
Don't for 1 minute think we are squeeky clean.

Most of Europe has a lot of racism.

Pretty much all Eastern Europe, Spain, Italy all have a lot of it.

Barely any in England in comparison

Loved Poland when I visited this summer. Cheap, clean, great people and very welcoming. It is very, very white though. In fact, of all the nations I've visited, it's the most white I've seen. I'm sure there are lots of reasons. Many economic I imagine. I saw practically no fat people whilst there either. Think it was the last day there, on the way back to the airport that I saw the first genuinely fat person, and as she got near I realised she was an American tourist.

Poland is a very ethnically homogeneous nation which as since the migrant crisis of 2015 continued to refuse the resettlement of African and Asian migrants under instructions from the Eu alongside Hungary And the Czech Republic.

This is the latest in several protests over the last couple of years against the Eu's proposals and are continually gathering momentum.

There is no great appetite in Poland to be come an ethnically diverse country akin those in Western Europe especially given some of the issues that has occurred from the influx in Germany, Austria and France.

I travel a fair bit and sadly the world over, there is some form of racism to one group or another,

Call an Indian, Asian. And see the response, ask a Vietnamese person if they are Chinese and similar heckles are raised. There are swathes of black people sleeping in parks in Italy and Belgium being exploited selling anything from umbrellas to drugs.

A few years ago I hoped the UK could demonstrate how tolerant it was to cultures, genders, sexuality and race and be a beacon to the world.

Sadly I was wrong. In the last 18 months, there is a huge increase in open racial hatred and intolerance and whenever I visit Barnsley (in my second week here caring for my Mum), I hear repetitive vitriol and digs about foreigners without being asked for, often vainly disguised as humour about some marginalised group. I find it desperately sad my home town is as it is. But its little different to large parts of the UK. There are exceptions of course and many lovely people in this country, but I've personally seen and heard more negativity to diversity than pre brexit.

I don't know how it will change. In London there is just about every different religion and creed possible and most of us are extremely content to live and work together and I don't know why that occurs, maybe its just been going on longer and time has helped. Who knows.

Whiter than white, certainly! I can't ever see a time when they will allow African/Asian immigration. Their government is a complete mess at the moment anyway so I suppose they might be daft enough to allow it. The people will not tolerate it though, I'm sure of that.
